I hope you’ve all had a nice summer. A few die-hard NEaT members braved the torrential rain in Helsinki on Saturday 21 August for the traditional summer picnic. The rain miraculously cleared for a few hours (more details below).

The NEaT autumn season is now beginning, and it involves a couple of events (see below) and board meetings. The board next meets in early September. Enjoy the autumn!

If you have any questions about NEaT, don’t hesitate to contact us at info@nordicedit.fi, or me personally at +358 44 313 2816.

Ian Mac Eochagáin
Chairman of the Board, NEaT
Greetings from NEaT’s annual picnic!

In a NEaT picnic miracle, the sun came out on one of the rainiest days of the year just as we put up the tent in our picnic spot. We did manage to gather a small but happy group of NEaTers to celebrate the summer together, in person.

After all, everyone wanted to be in the sun instead of under a tent!

Rebecca’s quiz on Shakespeare and rap led to some deep thoughts.

We share a commitment to high standards of professional development.

NEaT is looking forward to working more closely together with the CIEP in the future! See news on our website.

Partnering means that NEaT members now receive a discount for the CIEP conference. Booking closes on 8 September! To get your 20% discount at the CIEP conference on 11 to 14 September, please select  ‘non-member’ from the dropdown list and enter the discount code: neatbhsh21, and then hit ‘apply’.
NEaT Event: Whose Style Matters?
Thursday 23 September
17:30 to 18:30 EET on Zoom

As “global” English overtakes local languages in academia and public life, what is our role as editors? When and how (if ever) do we edit our authors’ style? We asked you what you think, and your opinions varied.

Editors love their style guides, but some questions of style are too controversial for a manual to rule on, as this answer to one question in our survey shows:

Can you guess which question split the respondents? Want to steer the debate in one direction? You still have until 7 September to respond to the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NEaTstyle.

NEaT members and revisors at the University of Helsinki will discuss the survey results on Thursday 23 September at 17:30–18:30 EET, on Zoom. We look forward to debating with you about whose style matters! If you want to join the debate, email info@nordicedit.fi and we will send you the Zoom link nearer to the time. Your input will help us refine our presentation on the same topic at METM21. See post on our website.
