October 2021

Four wildbooks (including whaleshark.org) will merge to become sharkbook.ai

Users of whaleshark.org, Wildbook for Sevengill Sharks, SpotAShark Australia, and Wildbook for Leopard Sharks will have a new home soon: sharkbook.ai. Creating a master Wildbook for all sharks will help us reduce maintenance costs and encourage collaboration. In addition to whale sharks, sevengills, sand tiger sharks, and leopard sharks, the platform will also support white shark identification. We aim to add support for additional species over time, beginning with tiger sharks.

There is no official transition date, but we expect the merge to take place at some point in October. Until then there is no content on sharkbook.ai.

Whale Sharks: Biology, Ecology, and Conservation

We are very excited to announce the publication of Whale Sharks: Biology, Ecology and Conservation. The book is the product of a strong collaborative effort within the whale shark community, many of whom are regulars on the Wildbook for Whale Sharks (whaleshark.org), and is available now on Amazon. Several chapters include contributions from Wild Me Executive Director Jason Holmberg and our scientific advisor in all things whale shark Dr. Simon Pierce.

Dr. Tanya Berger-Wolf's TED talk

Wild Me director and co-founder Dr. Tanya Berger-Wolf gave an excellent TED talk entitled "How AI Can Help Humans Save the Planets Biodiversity." Here's a great excerpt about the talk from the writers at TED:

We are losing biodiversity at an unprecedented scale and rate, faster than we are able to measure the loss, let alone combat it. These are daunting challenges, which require every tool available to humans. Dr. Tanya Berger-Wolf discusses how Artificial Intelligence (AI), the ultimate bio-hack, can help us slow the destruction and even reverse the damage. AI not only makes it possible to quickly scale conservation solutions, but in ways that can be remarkably personal, enabling each and every one of us to make a difference. Dr. Tanya Berger-Wolf is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology at the Ohio State University, where she is also the Director of the Translational Data Analytics Institute. As a computational ecologist, her research is at the unique intersection of computer science, wildlife biology, and social sciences.
Wild Me builds open software and artificial intelligence for the conservation research community. We are machine learning experts and software professionals supporting you in the fight against extinction.
