Given New CDC COVID Guidelines (on July 27, 2021) and the most recent NM DoH Public Health Order (August 17, 2021), The St. Luke Council has put forward the following guidelines for our worship practices: Wearing of masks is required for all attendees, regardless of vaccination status.
Singing is optional for all.
In addition to mask wearing, we continue to follow CDC COVID-19 Safe Practices: having available hand hygiene materials and ensuring adequate ventilation by opening exit doors to increase outdoor air flow (when outdoor conditions allow) and interior doors to help circulate the air throughout the church.  Propping open the exit doors before and after services provides an opportunity for a joyful and safe welcome to all worshipers.

From the Church Council
September 23, 2021

Dear St. Luke Members,
The church leadership held an all-day planning meeting this past Saturday at the Norbertine Abbey on south Coors Blvd.  We split the day into two parts.  The morning centered around a discussion of two readings that our pastors gave us concerning declining ELCA worship attendance numbers across the nation and a short book on an autopsy of 14 declining churches.  Where does St. Luke fit into this general trend of mainline church attendance decline and how can we best address this in the context of our neighborhood, community, national, and global missions?  In the afternoon, we conducted a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) analysis for St. Luke.  One of the principal results that came out of this analysis was that we need to be more deliberate in our external ministries.  How can we do better in reaching out to our neighborhood, the Albuquerque regional community, and broader ministries?
Well, we have some ideas.  If you were in church this weekend, you heard Pastor Wayne ask for volunteers to help St. Luke sponsor a family of Afghani refugees who will be relocated to Albuquerque this fall.  This effort is being led by Lutheran Family Services and they have asked local churches to sponsor families and help them get re-settled.  Look for other activities that we will be sponsoring in the coming months.  Of course, ministries need active church members to carry them out.  We ask that you prayerfully consider volunteering your time and talents at St. Luke to help us better realize our Mission Statement:  “Rooted in God’s Word, Serving in God’s World”.

Mid-Week Wednesday
Bible Study
The Letter of James has too often been neglected by the Lutheran church.  One scholar has said that reading James is a “bit like the kind of Turkish bath where you get hotter and hotter and then suddenly someone dumps a bucket of icy water over you.  James thinks in a different way to most other New Testament authors.”  Well, on Wednesday mornings, we will be taking not a Turkish bath but a Finnish sauna with Pastor Wayne and then we will together take the plunge in a cold icy lake!

About the Class
* 6 Weeks – on Wednesdays
* Two Possible Times to Attend:  8AM and Noon, on Zoom.
* Format:   Bible Study – Digging into the Bible text – Brief presentation and discussions ... & probably some articles tossed your way from Pastor Wayne!

Lutheran Family Services: Afghan Refugees Coming to ABQ
The Lutheran churches of ABQ have been asked to assist in the settling of Afghan refugees [with Special Immigrant Visas (SIV)] – with the withdrawal of American forces in Afghanistan.

Updated Information Regarding Lutheran Family Services (LFS) and Afghan Evacuees:
  • LFS will be in charge of welcoming and assisting Afghan refugees settlement in New Mexico. (200 individuals in ABQ, 100 in Las Cruces, 100 in Santa Fe).
  • Afghan "evacuees" will enter New Mexico over a period of weeks (not all at once).
  • St. Luke has been asked to form a core team that will be responsible for welcoming ONE family (including picking them up from the airport, enrolling children in school, providing culturally appropriate meals for a short time, assisting with transportation to appointments, helping them to integrate into our community [using buses, exploring the city] etc.)
  • At this time, St. Luke needs a "point person" to lead our host team of about 6-10 people.
  • And $6,000 will be needed for the first 3 months from St. Luke
Please speak to Pastor Wayne!

For the Wider Church
We pray for Lutheran Family Services in Albuquerque; Luther House NM/CNM; Navajo Lutheran Mission in Rock Point, AZ; churches in Afghanistan; and missionaries sent by God all over the world. We pray for the persecuted church.

We pray for ELCA missionary pastor and professor of Church History, The Rev. Carolyn Schneider, Ph.D. as she prepares to move to Jamaica to teach at the (UTCWI) United Theological College of the West Indies (http://www.utcwi.edu.jm). We pray as she goes through the working visa application process & final travel arrangements, her journey to a new (for her) country and settling at her temporary home at the UTCWI campus.

We join with the staff of World Vision, a Christian relief organization in Afghanistan in praying for the safety of children in Afghanistan amid conflict in the country. We pray that God would bring peace to this country so that children and families might live without fear of violence. We pray for the health of Afghan children and their families; currently 40% of Afghan children suffer from malnutrition.

We pray with The Evangelical Lutheran Education Association (ELEA) for children, families and staff of our sister preschools in Louisiana that were heavily damaged by Hurricane Ida: Christ the King in Kenner; Hosanna Christian Preschool in Mandeville; and Concordia Lutheran School in Marrero.

For Our Country
At this time of war and conflict we pray for all the members of the American military and foreign service in danger anywhere in the world. Allow them to accomplish their missions and come home safely to us. We pray for all those innocently caught up in the conflicts. And because our Lord Jesus commanded us to pray for our enemies and those who persecute us, we ask you, Lord to always remind us that you created them in your image, that Christ died for them, that they are beloved of God just like us, so that we might with sincerity pray, Lord have mercy on them.
