Alaska INBRE Investigators Receive Seven
Administrative Supplement Awards

We can’t say it enough, Alaskan researchers rock! The NIH National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) awards Administrative Supplement opportunities to develop collaborations between investigators, purchase equipment, address critical issues of women’s health, and surveillance studies of SARS-CoV-2 viral strains. Since 2019 the Alaska INBRE program has received seven Administrative Supplements totaling $2,028,441.  

Awardees in 2019 and 2020 were Jennifer Shaw, Jaedon Avey, Matthew Wooller, Sara Buckingham, and Holly Martinson for a total of $568,607. 

In the current award year, a total of $1,459,834 has been awarded to Patrick Tomco, Jack Chen, Devin Drown, Eric Bortz, Lauren Lessard, Katie Cueva, and Jennifer Schmidt.

"The Role of Research and Data in Advancing American Indian and Alaska Native Health Policy"
 
Harvard University Native American Program and Global Health & Social Medicine invite you to join them for their Indigenous Health and Well-Being Colloquium Series. This month Yvette Roubideaux, MD, Director, Policy Research Center, National Congress of American Indians, will present "The Role of Research and Data in Advancing American Indian and Alaska Native Health Policy." This presentation will review examples where data and research can help develop and promote policies that have a better chance of addressing persistent health disparities and promoting health in tribal communities. Oct 27, 12PM ET (8AM AK) via Zoom.
Biomedical Commercialization
Short Course
ASCEND is offering a virtual, multi-site course, “Bridging the Gap: Commercialization for Biomedical Researchers” for the Western IDeA states. This four-week course provides an introduction to commercialization and tech transfer for biomedical researchers. Our past attendees have included staff, graduate students, post docs, and faculty working in NIH research. This program uses a mixture of synchronous and asynchronous instruction with a weekly meeting time on Wednesdays from 2-3PM MDT in October. This four-week course starts on October 6th and ends on October 27th. The sessions below are listed for Mountain Time. Register here.

A team of UA biomedical researchers have joined a federally funded effort to improve tracking of COVID-19 variants throughout the state. The NIH grant supports efforts to sequence and analyze genomes of variants circulating in Alaska. Participants include UAF researchers Jack Chen and Devin Drown, and UAA researchers Jason Burkhead, Cindy Knall and Eric Bortz, with collaborators Southcentral Foundation and the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. Check here for the latest report
