SJI Responds to Hurricane Ida

In September, our service territories experienced an unprecedented amount of damage and destruction due to severe weather brought on by Hurricane Ida. Our utilities, South Jersey Gas and Elizabethtown Gas, responded to several thousand emergency and service calls, with the Elizabethtown Gas Emergency Response Team responding to 2,633 calls alone. Thanks to the diligence and preparation of our field crews, our gas distribution systems were kept safe, with zero motor vehicle accidents and zero injuries. Due to a tornado passing through parts of Southern New Jersey, South Jersey Gas had 108 work orders, including 18 emergency calls and 27 severely damaged homes that required service shutoffs.

In recent years, we've focused our investments on storm-hardening measures in vulnerable coastal communities. These efforts paid off tremendously in our response to Hurricane Ida.

SJI provides local first responders with natural gas emergency training
Throughout this year, SJI's subsidiaries, South Jersey Gas and Elizabethtown Gas, have been offering training to first responders in their service areas on how to handle emergency situations involving natural gas. The class helps fire service agencies and other emergency departments understand what to expect from the gas company during a response and educates them on what to do prior to our arrival. Equally important, the classes serve as a platform for gas company employees and local safety officials to meet in person or virtually to form relationships prior to meeting during an actual emergency.

If your town’s first responders have not participated in training yet and would like to please contact Stephen Cope, Emergency Preparedness Specialist Lead SJI Utilities at scope@sjindustries.com.
