The Power of Study Sermon Notes
The second week in our new sermon series Means of Grace covered the topic of attending worship services. Pastor John began the sermon reading John Wesley's instructions for singing which were first included in the 1761 publication Select Hymns, a hymnbook for early Methodists.
You can watch the worship service at this link: Worship 9-19-2021
Instructions for Singing:
I. Learn these Tunes before you learn any others; afterwards learn as many as you please.
II. Sing them exactly as they are printed here, without altering or amending them at all; and if you have learned to sing them otherwise, unlearn it as soon as you can.
III. Sing All. See that you join with the congregation as frequently as you can. Let not a slight degree of weakness or weariness hinder you. If it is a cross to you, take it up and you will find a blessing.
IV. Sing lustily and with good courage. Beware of singing as if you were half dead, or half asleep; but lift up your voice with strength. Be no more afraid of your voice now, nor more ashamed of its being heard, than when you sung the songs of Satan.
V. Sing modestly. Do not bawl, so as to be heard above or distinct from the rest of the congregation, that you may not destroy the harmony; but strive to unite your voices together, so as to make one clear melodious sound.
VI. Sing in Time: Whatever time is sung, be sure to keep with it. Do not run before nor stray behind it; but attend closely to the leading voices, and move therewith as exactly as you can. And take care you sing not too slow. This drawling way naturally steals on all who are lazy; and it is high time to drive it out from among us, and sing all our tunes just as quick as we did at first.
VII. Above all sing spiritually. Have an eye to God in every word you sing. Aim at pleasing him more than yourself, or any other creature. In order to this, attend strictly to the sense of what you sing, and see that your Heart is not carried away with the sound, but offered to God continually; so shall your singing be such as the Lord will approve of here, and reward when he cometh in the clouds of heaven.

Christmas Handbells
Tim Smith, our music director, is looking to put together a small Handbell choir for Christmas. Handbells are one of the few things that can easily be done with social distancing and masking. This makes it an excellent choice for this year. If you have played handbells in the past or would like to learn, please let Tim know. The handbell choir will begin rehearsals soon.

Time to Update the Directory
It's been just about a year since our last directory came out. We will be checking in with everyone to make sure your information has not changed over the last year. Several people have moved, others have gotten rid of their landline telephones. We want to make sure we have all of that updated in our directory and in our computer system.
You can help by proactively emailing the Office@RamonaUMC.org and letting us know what if any information has changed? Here are some questions to help guide you.
1. Have you moved in the last year?
2. Did you change your phone number, or get rid of your landline phone?
3. Did you change your email or stop using your email?
4. Is there more or less information you would like publicly shown in the directory?
If you have your 2020 directory, feel free to use it as a guide and simply email any changes you would like to have made.

Current Sermon Series
September 12th - October 31st
Courageous and forward-leaning mission congregations practice spiritual disciplines. Our vital work is a spiritual adventure based on John Wesley's Means of Grace. John Wesley taught that God's grace is unearned and that we are not to be idle waiting to experience grace but we should engage in the Means of Grace. The Means of Grace are ways God works invisibly hastening, strengthening; and confirming faith so that God's grace pervades in and through disciples. As we look at several of these Means of Grace we will gain tools to develop and nurture our personal faith and relationship with God. We will also become better equipped to share the good news of Jesus Christ with the world. The series began on September 12th and covers topics including Study, Worship, Prayer, Sacraments, and Teaching. Join us in person or online for this exciting 8-week series. Remember, if you miss a week in-person you can always catch up with the YouTube versions.

CD/ DVD Worship Service Ministry
If you, or someone you know, has trouble viewing our worship service on YouTube or Zoom, we are happy to send out a CD or DVD copy of the worship service each week instead. We are already doing this and would gladly do it for more people. We want everyone to be able to enjoy the weekly worship services. The disks usually arrive in the mail on Thursday or Friday of each week following the Sunday worship service. This service is free, as our Good Samaritan Fund covers the very minimal cost of Media Mail rate from the Post Office.

How to Lift up a Prayer Request to be Shared in Worship
Prayer concerns for worship can be submitted throughout the week but have to be turned in by 9:00 am on Sunday to be sure they are included in Sunday's worship service. If you don't like using electronic devices, you can fill out a prayer card in the back of the sanctuary before church and hand it to Jennifer at the table in the back of the sanctuary. Otherwise you can send us your prayer concerns anytime using one of the following ways.
