NEW YEAR, NEW NAMES

From 2022 Rustenburg will be divided into five new houses to complement the Vertical Tutoring approach. Vertical Tutoring encompasses much more than the inter-house sporting and cultural competitions which have existed in the past. Each new house will become a hub for academic and holistic development. Tutor groups, consisting of learners of mixed grades, will spend time together daily.

It is documented, by past principal Ms McIntyre, that in 1930 Rustenburg pupils were originally divided among eight houses, which later became five: Bleby, Cambridge, Innes, Marchand and Michiel Vos.

Historically, Rustenburg was a school reserved for white people. Much of the culture, including traditions and signs, remain steeped in the past. Rustenburg is now a place where the principles of a democratic South Africa are upheld. The renaming of the houses is part of the process of evaluating the symbols of Rustenburg and changing these to align with the school’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

A House Naming Committee will be overseeing the process. The RCL (Representative Council of Learners) has already brainstormed several suggestions. The intention is for considerable consultation, with current pupils and staff, as an invaluable part of Rustenburg’s transformation journey.

The process will take place during Term 4 and will culminate with the announcement of the new house names, and their corresponding colours, at the start of 2022. Please encourage your children to be actively involved, by sharing their many ideas, when the time comes.
