WEBINAR SERIES INVITE:
THE EXTENSION AGENT OF THE FUTURE
WEBINAR 4:
Analytics: How collective digital data can be turned into actionable data-driven agronomy insights
Date and time: 20 October 2021 at 3:00 PM CEST (UTC + 2)

Dear Community Members,

We invite you to join us for the fourth session of our 2021 webinar series on The Extension Agent of the Future, "Analytics: How collective digital data can be turned into actionable data-driven agronomy insights". We will explore the role of new generation of agronomists using these tools and information.

Traditionally, analytical-based agricultural decision-making relied on mathematical models that are not optimized for the complexity of agricultural systems with strong interactions across time and space. Newer data science approaches (e.g. data mining, AI, and geospatial statistics) can leverage newly available datasets and other sources of information (e.g. remote sensing, georeferenced ground data, social media, video, text, voice, and other mobile phone-based data) to make sense of the complexity and provide actionable recommendations towards agricultural extension.

In this webinar, we will explore how to move from collective digital information to data-driven agronomy insights, the role of analytics in providing decision support to extension programs, and how to decide what analytical tool is most appropriate to create context-specific content.

The two speakers for this webinar are Alice Laborte, Unit Leader of Spatial Transformation of Landscapes at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), and Matt Miller, Lead Data Scientist at iSDA.

Daniel Jiménez, Leader of the Data-Driven Agronomy Community of Practice, and David Guerena, Research Strategist at the CGIAR Platform for Big Data, will host this session.

SPEAKERS

Alice Laborte
Leader of the research unit of Spatial Transformation and Landscapes
International Rice Research Institute

Alice Laborte is a Senior Scientist and the Research Unit Leader of Spatial Transformation of Landscapes at the International Rice Research Institute. She leads a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in GIS, remote sensing, crop modelling, ICT, and social science. Her research focuses on the use of spatial information to generate evidence, actionable information, and insights to inform policy, research prioritization, and effective targeting and scaling of technological innovations.  She holds a PhD in Production Ecology and Resource Conservation from Wageningen University, The Netherlands and a Master of Geographical Information Systems from the University of Queensland, Australia.

Matt Miller
Lead Data Scientist
iSDA
Matt Miller is the Lead Data Scientist at iSDA, contributing to the development of iSDA's open access resources and smallholder agronomy tools. Matt has a background in Plant Science but more recently has worked in software development and data science in the agri-tech industry.

WEBINAR - TRADE-OFFS AND SYNERGIES BETWEEN DIFFERENT EXTENSION DELIVERY MODELS

In the rush to develop and use new methodologies are we discarding traditional, yet powerful, approaches to agricultural extension? Are we excluding communities that lack access to digital technologies? What are the trade-offs from moving from traditional to digital approaches? Can synergies be gained from combining the approaches? In this webinar, we examine these questions. WATCH
