16 youth led projects share £1.1 million of Young Start funding
Figures published earlier this year by the National Office of Statistics* showed that young people were disproportionately impacted by the 114,000 jobs lost in Scotland in 2020 due to the pandemic. The funding announced this week will help young people from the Inner Hebrides to Renfrewshire gain the employability skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to enter the workplace. Young Start, delivered by The National Lottery Community Fund, awards dormant bank account funding to projects that help young people reach their full potential. See full list of projects here.

World Mental Health Day

The World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day on 10 October every year. This year's theme set by the World Federation for Mental Health is 'Mental Health in an Unequal World'. This theme, chosen for 2021, will highlight that access to mental health services remains unequal, with between 75% to 95% of people with mental disorders in low- and middle-income countries unable to access mental health services at all, and access in high income countries is not much better. Lack of investment in mental health disproportionate to the overall health budget contributes to the mental health treatment gap.  More here

Young Women Rise survey
This survey seeks to gather data on young women's perceptions, awareness and understanding about domestic abuse, unhealthy relationships and existing support structures. We are conducting this research in order to get a better understanding of young women's own lived experience so that we can look at how support services can cater better to young women's needs. Please note that you will not be asked to provide details about anything that has happened to you. The data gathered will also be used to create a digital campaign spreading awareness about where young women can seek support. More here

Scottish COVID-19 Mental Health Tracker Study: Wave 4 Report

Long COVID Support Fund

Scottish Government announce £10 million Long COVID Support Fund to help health boards respond to the condition. Earlier this month Humza Yousaf, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, announced £10 million would be allocated to a Long COVID Support Fund for NHS Boards to maximise and improve the co-ordination of a broad range of existing services across the health and social care system and third sector in response to the condition. NHS Boards are responsible for delivering services to meet the needs of people with long term effects of COVID-19 in their areas. The Scottish Government’s 2021-2022 Budget takes the total health portfolio funding to in excess of £16 billion, with a further £1.08 billion of funding to address pressures related to COVID-19. This substantial additional investment has benefited a range of NHS services which are supporting the needs of people living with Long COVID. More here.
