4 things Seattle is talking about
🛋 This sensory installation reveals a darker side of the disco era. “amber” is a new experience that’s open to the public now through Monday, Sept. 27 at 12th Avenue Arts. Beyond the dancing, bell bottoms, and shiny lights, the golden age of disco coincided with the AIDS epidemic, and the very people responsible for creating one of the most joyous genres of music happened to be the ones most ravaged by the disease. The installation is a tribute to the LGBTQ+ women of that era who stepped up to care for their sick friends and those affected within the community. Make a reservation to experience the exhibit for yourself. (The Seattle Times)
👋 Amazon’s name may not be on its new arena, but its tech will be inside. The company is equipping several food and beverage stores in Climate Pledge Arena with its Amazon Go technology that lets customers enter and pay with just a wave of their hand. So if you always hated long concession lines, now you can avoid them all with a simple trade of time for your biometric data! (GeekWire)
📽 Cinephiles rejoice, independent movie theatres are making their return. Any film-lover knows that there’s something special about going to their favorite small theatre where they can watch an indie flick that isn’t showing at the local AMC. But since the pandemic, that hasn’t been an option. These independent theatres, like the Grand Illusion and Central Cinema, are typically nonprofits and run by small crews, making this past year and a half especially difficult. Now they’re starting to reopen, and while the future remains uncertain, they’re excited to welcome back patrons and festivals. The Grand Illusion hopes for the return of its annual screening of “It’s a Wonderful Life” this year — which, I, your editor, look forward to. (Crosscut)
