Reviewers Comments:
Kudos to Bruce Honeyman on his massive debut project Old Roots, New Branches: Irish/Celtic Music Edition - conceived, composed, performed and recorded all on his own during the pandemic. Thank you for giving us the chance to have a peek inside your musical self - it's a lovely place to explore! — Marla Fibish

With original melodies that sound almost familiar, multi-instrumentalist Bruce Honeyman brings a deep knowledge of acoustic music and traditional Irish to this album of well-crafted original tunes. Bruce's subtle and creative use of percussion help bring a distinct world music influence to many of the tunes. A highly enjoyable listen. — Kathy Barwick

An Goilin
An Góilín

An Góilín Traditional Singers

International Singing Session
Online occasional Fridays, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM PDT
(See Calendar goilin.com/calendar )

Online via Zoom

Since 1979, Dublin's An Góilín Traditional Singers Club members have gathered each Friday evening at 9:00 PM local time for singing sessions.

When these indoor gatherings were restricted on March 27th, 2020, An Góilín joined the mass migration of such musical gatherings to the Zoom online meeting platform, and to their surprise, An Góilín members have found a much wider audience joining in!

Friday, September 24th, will be the first night of our 16th annual festival celebrating one of the most important singers and song collectors of the late 20th century, the Frank Harte Festival. Tonight's session will be on Zoom, so log on to www.frankhartefestival.ie to find out all of the details and how book for the various events over the weekend. This year's Frank Harte Festival (24 - 26 September 2021) will be a hybrid festival, with a pre-recorded singing walk (normally a themed singing and walking tour which takes place at locations around Dublin city), a live streamed workshop and concert (subject to restrictions in force at the time) and live Zoom singing sessions. The walk, workshop and concert will all be streamed from the Frank Harte Festival Facebook page and from An Góilín's YouTube channel. All information on Festival guests etc. is available now at www.frankhartefestival.ie.

Máire Ni Chróinin says:
The shift to Zoom has allowed us to connect with an unexpected global audience. It has been a pleasure to hear traditional songs from singers all around the world and to get to know singers from Australia, the USA and from different parts of Europe. It has also allowed us to reconnect with our friends all across the UK who have more opportunity to come to our in-person sessions during 'normal' times, but who were grounded just like everyone else when the pandemic broke out.

It is our intention to use technology to connect every so often with the international section of our community and our first will be this Friday, September 17th. This will be our first ever 'hybrid' open singing session - we are calling it a Room & Zoom session.

If you have previously joined our email list, your Zoom link will have reached your inbox early this week. If not, you can send us and email at angoilintraditionalsingers@gmail.com and ask to be added to the list, but we are busy with preparations today and may not get to it until next time. — Máire.

For details and more information about An Góilín, including our calendar of events, check their website http://www.goilin.com. You can also find them on their Facebook Page, https://www.facebook.com/AnGoilin.

The Eugene O'Neill Festival Returns
Featured Play: Beyond the Horizon

Saturday, September 25th, & Sunday, September 26th, 4pm

Eugene O'Neill's Tao House Barn, 1000 Kuss Rd, Danville, CA

COVID Policy
The National Park Service and the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, Tao House comply with Covid-19 protocols at the time of in-person events. Masks are required at this time (as of Aug 15, 2021). Live events will have reduced capacity seating.

Please read our full FAQs before purchasing tickets.

The Eugene O'Neill Festival returns this fall with a combination of live and virtual events. The festival centerpiece will be a filmed production of O'Neill's first great drama Beyond the Horizon. The play was the playwright's first to appear on Broadway and won him the first of his four Pulitzer prizes. In addition to the film, there will be two live performances of Beyond the Horizon on the last weekend of September.

The festival will be rounded out with the premiere of EONF Artistic Director Eric Fraisher Hayes' playful and informative theatrical lecture Eugene O'Neill: 51 Plays in 51 Minutes at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley, as well as a hike, a downtown walk, and a special storytelling campaign entitled 'Tiny Horizon Stories.'

An unexpected romance turns the Mayo family farm upside down and changes the course of lives, the family, and the farm in what many consider America's first great tragic drama. Robert and Andrew Mayo, and neighbor Ruth Atkins grew up together as brothers and sister, but when love joins the picture everything changes. Destinies are disrupted and a chain of well-intended decisions leads to dire consequences. Beyond the Horizon won Eugene O'Neill his first Pulitzer Prize and put O'Neill on the Broadway map.

The play Beyond the Horizon calls for a combination of outdoor and indoor scenes, which have traditionally been difficult to represent. Our production will be filmed to highlight the natural beauty and farm-like qualities of the Tao House property.  Additionally, two live performances of the play will take place with seating at reduced capacity. These special live performances will utilize a combination of outdoor and indoor settings which require some minimal walking.

Linda Keen learned to play fiddle as a young child in her hometown is Sacramento, but over the decades has had numerous experiences in tradtional music, starting at the Starry Plough with Kevin Keegan and his Graineog Ceili Band in the '70s, followed by 16 years based in the Netherlands, where she married, a series at Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, and a season studying fiddle music in Lerwick, Shetland Islands, Scotland just to mention a few. Stepping Stone, founded in June of 2012, is a dream unfolding as Linda and her band members pay homage to the precious gifts of older musical traditions and to the industrious and magical people who were successful in keeping them well and alive.

Multi-instrumentalist James Wilson enjoys a good tune. His road to Stepping Stone has been a long and winding one. His affinity for Irish music comes from his parents Jim and Patricia who immigrated to the United States in the late 1950’s. His father played a small one-row Hohner button accordion called a melodeon, and his mother sang; thus, James grew up listening to homegrown music in addition to the Clancy Brothers, Irish Rovers, and, of course, The Chieftains.

Stephen Davis grew up listening to folk songs that his mother used to sing to him at an early age, and he has been singing ever since. Stephen started playing guitar at the age of eleven and became an avid listener of early English folk songs and tunes from the Renaissance and Medieval period. For the past decade, Stephen has been a back-up sessions guitar player and that is where he first met up with fiddler, Linda Keen.

Marla & Bruce say:
We are thrilled to let you know that our new album Every Migrant is My Fellow is at the printers, and will be boxed up and shipped to us on Monday, September 27!  All the music on it depicts, celebrates, or mourns for those who are in life-altering transit: vagabonds of all sorts, migrants, refugees, those newly born, those departing this life.

In keeping with our theme and out of respect for those in these passages, our album sales will benefit the International Rescue Committee. The IRC responds to the world's most dire humanitarian crises and helps those whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and get control over their lives. In more than 40 countries and over 20 U.S. cities, their dedicated teams provide clean water, shelter, health care, education and empowerment support to refugees and displaced people.

So all you lovely people who have pre-ordered the album should have your copies in hand in the first week of October. We are more than grateful!  So far your pre-orders have generated $560 for the International Rescue Committee.

Originally, the pre-order window was just for August, but we've extended it to the end of September. Until then, for every pre-order, we will send half the price ($10) to the IRC.  PREORDER HERE!

Noctambule is Marla Fibish and Bruce Victor. They play a variety of musical forms – traditional Irish tunes and songs, their own compositions written in traditional forms, and compelling settings of a broad range of poetry. This unique collaboration brings out surprising qualities in these seasoned musicians. Their work is rendered with lush beauty, sensitivity and humour on an unusual array of strings - different guitars in varied tunings, mandola, mandolin, cittern, tenor guitar - and their blended voices. A Noctambule experience is like no other - a wake-up call for body and soul.

Òmar Bhochanan and Scott Morrison

Facing Our History: How do the Colonized who became Colonizers become Allies

Sunday, Ocober 3rd, 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM PDT (2:00 – 3:30 pm EDT)

Online via Zoom

Free Registration
Join us for an an online conversation between:
Dr. Òmar Bhochanan, Gàidhlig teacher and activist from Cape Breton
and
Scott Morrison, Co-founder and Head Teacher of Sgoil Gàidhlig Bhaile an Taigh Mhóir
Free event but registration is required. Join us as we examine:
• Specific historical examples of the implementation of the process of colonization and the development of capitalist economy in Scotland.
• How the different social strata of Scottish Gaelic society were affected at home and in the diaspora.
• Some of the multiple actors involved in the transformation of Gaelic Scotland.
• The power of historical narrative and why it can mislead us.

We are excited to announce episode three of Facing Our History – The North American Gael. This is the first episode where our guest comes from a Gàidhealtachd; in this case the Nova Scotia Gàidhealtachd. To date, the Facing Our History series has examined the colonization and oppression of the Gael and their dispersal in North America from a national and cultural perspective, and from an economic or class perspective. This dialogue between Òmar Bhochanan and Scott Morrison will examine the legacy of settler colonialism and its impact on the Gael.

Òmar is a partner and consultant in Inside Out, a Gàidhlig and yoga teacher, a weaver, and a Gaelic activist.  She  lives on the Bras d'Or lake in Grass Cove, Mi'kma'ki | Cape Breton Island with her 12 year old daughter Sadie. She's been working toward her own healing and her Gàidhlig community's healing from colonization for the past 15 years.  Amber teaches Gàidhlig language and traditional cultural practices both in community and at Baile Nan Gàidheal | Highland Village Museum. Òmar has also been building connections with Gaels and Cape Breton's Indigenous people, the Mi'kmaq, noticing similarities and celebrating uniqueness with the intention to forge peace, friendship and collective resilience.

In the only surviving Gaelic settlement in North America, we see in a modern context the effect of colonialism and imperialism on a people’s historical narrative, their culture, and their relationship with the land and Indigenous people. In this unique conversation, we will obtain a first person view point from someone living in the Nova Scotia Gàidhealtachd about that community’s historical, environmental, and cultural impact on the region, and their efforts to redress relationships with Indigenous nations.

O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat
An Irish Music Camp Like No Other!

Thursday, October, 21st 7:00 PM CDT - Sunday October 24th

Hoblitzelle Camp & Conference Center, 8060 Singleton Rd, Midlothian, TX

COVID Policy
After considering the current state of the pandemic worsened by the Delta variant, we have decided to require all our participants at the 2021 O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat to be fully vaccinated and, under certain conditions, masked. We apologize for any inconvenience or disruption this may cause those who have already enrolled. Here is our new COVID Policy -- https://oflahertyretreat.org/covid-policy/.

The 18th annual O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat will be this year's premiere gathering of Irish music lovers nurturing the tradition that we hold close to our hearts.

This unique event immerses you in a complete traditional Irish music community for four days of classes, sessions, concerts, dances, camaraderie and learning in depth on dozens of aspects of Irish culture, including Enrichment classes, Informances, and dozens of Workshops.

Each year we invite internationally respected musicians from within the Irish music tradition to perform and teach our classes. Organized by the Traditional Irish Music Education Society (TIMES), we also engage a core group of local and area-wide volunteers and staff who are dedicated to making the retreat a memorable experience for each participant.

This year, we gather on Thursday, October, 21st at 7:00 PM CDT for a BBQ dinner followed by a concert and the airing of a documentary video that was made about last year's virtual event. Classes and other activities begin Friday morning.

Check out our YouTube Channel for videos of everything you can expect at O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat.

Named in honor of Jim O'Flaherty, a musician who immigrated from Ireland to North Texas spreading the Irish music tradition through his family, friends and community, the O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat continues with Jim's commitment to help others learn, enjoy, and grow in these rich traditions. Read More about our history…

Michael Eskin says:
With other Zoom sessions either closing down or changing to once-a-month format, and a few in person sessions restarting, I wanted to remind everyone that I'll continue to host The Ould Sod Virtual Session on Zoom every Thursday evening for as long as there are enough players each time, and we've generally been between 20 and 30 players on the past few Thursdays.

Plough

The Plough and Stars Update

Wednesday — Sunday 4 to 12 PM

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, 116 Clement Street at 2nd Avenue, San Francisco, CA

COVID Policy
Vaccination and Masks
Required Indoors
Make sure you bring your proof of vaccination when you come to The Plough.
Sean Heaney says:
Music at the Plough is back. We aren hosting an instrumental Irish Traditional session Sunday afternoons at 3:00 PM and a song session lead by Christy O'Connell and Vince Keehan on the second Wednesday of every month at 8:00 PM. Drop by for a pint!

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, is known around the world for hosting incredible Irish music and pulling beautiful pints of Guinness since 1975. Since then, it has evolved to host live music every night of the week, except Monday, including all genres of music; Bluegrass, Country, Rock, Zydeco, acoustic Americana, and of course, Irish Traditional.

Over the years The Plough and the Stars in San Francisco has hosted many well-known musicians from Ireland and around the globe, but the COVID pandemic and related public health restrictions put a stop to all that for over a year. The resulting business losses threatened to put The Plough out of business permanently, but a sustained community crowdfunding effort helped keep it going, and now it appears to have emerged intact.

Check The Plough and Stars Website for the latest updates.

Starry Session

Starry Session Online

First Sunday of each month, from 8:00 to 10:00 PM

Online via YouTube for The Starry Plough, 3101 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, CA

The pandemic shut down the well loved Starry Plough in Berkeley a year ago, halting the Sunday night Irish session and Monday night Irish dancing that had been hosted there for decades.

A small group of Plough regulars are convening electronically, and have begun a monthly open session online, on the first Sunday of the month, running for two hours and starting at 8:00 PM. It kicked off on Easter Sunday, as that holiday has always been a time for new beginnings--particularly in Ireland.

The online Starry Session is live-streamed on YouTube allowing other people listen, play, sing or dance along. It works like this: individuals among a pre-selected group of musicians will be called upon to lead a dance tune or song in rotation. Everyone else is on mute; they can follow the music at home with their own instruments or voices or whatever. It's not as magical as being able to hear each other, but it can still be surprisingly therapeutic.

You can tune in on THIS YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMR8XRkX_HX9NdL7bRKCp-g

Other ringleaders of this effort are Don Clark, Sean Wahl, Michele Delattre and Shay Black, so you might see communications from any of them as this process goes forward.

DukeofEdinburgh
Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant
Across from Apple Park

The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant

Open 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM every day of the year

10801 N. Wolfe Road, Cupertino, CA

Many of you have heard the rumors about the The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant.

When this pandemic is over, 'The Duke'! will be moving to new quarters just across the parking lot from our current location!
For details, Watch the official Video!

The Duke is, and will remain, THE only Authentic, (and we do mean AUTHENTIC!), British Pub in the Bay Area, located across the street from Apple Headquarters on Wolfe Road in Cupertino.

The atmosphere at the 'The Duke', is the same as you would find in any pub in the British Isles, full of friendly patrons who come in to socialize, play darts, have a pint or two, and eat a meal. If you are looking for a comfortable elegance, pints of beer and authentic food, in an authentic English Pub, there is no a better choice in the Bay Area. The Duke offers a large number of beers on draft and by the bottle. Almost anything English, Scottish or Irish is available. Murphy's Irish Stout brewed in Cork, Ireland and Scotch Eggs is always a good choice.

The servers are excellent and very knowledgeable about the beer and food menu. The menu is expansive and worth exploring. The dark pubsy feel with old regulars in their respective, but not crowded corners around lunch hour in Cupertino, is a great boon.

You can't find more 'authentic' atmosphere, because the entire building was built in jolly old England, then disassembled, shipped and reassembled on site in Cupertino. With the red velvet seating and wall paper and ornate, dim lighting, you are transported to London as soon as you enter the etched glass door.

More info. on The Duke Facebook Page, website www.theduke.com or call 408-446-3853.
