Last night the New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists (NJ-SPJ) presented its first session of “The Press, the Police and the Public” series. Panelists included journalists Melanie Burney (The Philadelphia Inquirer), Blake Nelson (NJ.com/NJ Advance Media), and April Saul (WHYY), as well as members of the community, law enforcement and academia.

NJ-SPJ sponsored the event with the Keystone Pro Chapter of SPJ, the NAACP of Southern Burlington County and Rowan College at Burlington County.  Sixty-seven people attended the event. You can watch a video replay here. The 90-minute event ran an hour long, with many questions from the audience directed at law enforcement panelists.

“The discussion began with an examination of the “racist rant” in Mt. Laurel over the summer. Both journalists and the NAACP discussed the need to focus on more than just the most dramatic moments of a story, with both illustrating ways for the public to get more information," NJ-SPJ President Bob Shapiro wrote in a recap of the event. "In answering audience questions, reporters pointed out ways to find good, informed journalism."
