For our new installment of Cicada
we are excited to welcome Marc Merza

Marc Merza is a Filipino-American musician, sound designer and artist from Los Angeles, CA. The relation of his sonic work is threaded tightly with his experience of displacement and Asian diaspora- often utilizing tape loops and analog equipment alongside acoustic instruments to express these emotions. He works with numerous collaborators in the practice of recording and performing which signifies his view on the importance of community. Currently, Marc Merza is working on a series of compositions for Kulintang and Sarunay- indigenous metallophones from the Philippines- in hopes of bridging the gap between his musical experience and his culture.

BORED LORD

Daria Lourd is a Memphis-born Oakland-based multidisciplinary artist and DJ that has been laying roots in Oakland's DIY underground rave scene alongside Bastiengoat and the chosen club families formed through Club Chai. Prolific in output (both releases and mixes) while also holding down a monthly hour slot on Lower Grand Radio (every 1st Sunday 8 PM), she explores territories spanning all things techno, bass, footwork, jungle, r&b, hip hop, rap, pop, nu metal and more, uncovering the darker and more hypnotic terrains of sound.

New releases include a live acid set from her radio show now available on Lower Grand Tapes and her first EP vinyl release on T4T LUV NRG, the "Last Illusion," featuring cover art by Periwinkle Lamb, with both sound and visuals paying tribute to Larry Mitchell's 1977 fantasy novel with Ned Asta's illustrations “The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions”. Four heavy hard house tracks that serve as expressions of queer / trans love while also pushing back on capitalism and the patriarchy.
For those that missed Bored Lord's in store last Saturday, we now have the full 5 hour set archived on our stream for your listening pleasure.

~ NEW ARRIVALS ~

SQUIRRELS ON FILM

Honored to present a selection from SF-based label run by local legends / club veterans Solar and C.L.A.W.S., showcasing releases from Bay Area's own such as It's Own Infinite Flower and other talent from beyond such as Florida's Chris Mitchell, Vienna's Alyssa Auvinen Barrera (LDY OSC) and Berlin's Michelle Tansella (TANS). The imprint mines the fertile in-between where post-punk, synth, and EBM meet house, techno, and electro while also blurring genre lines. Beautiful psychedelic full colored sleeve illustrations from S.O.F. artist in residence Bert Bergen, making each copy an art object in its own right.

The second multimedia release from Left Hand Path comes to us from SF-based singer/producer/performance artist IDHAZ. "psychic behaviors" explores the body and the assignments which are given to it. It explores our undefined nature as creatures of earth, and our desire to be connected without a wall of ammunition between our designated countries. Combining elements such as Gameboy, MPC, SP-555, synth, and original lyrics and vocals, IDHAZ enters into the realms of R&B, house, punk, juke, and noise with his latest release psychic behaviors. Housed in a clear vinyl bag that includes a professionally dubbed and printed audio cassette and a zine featuring photos by Beau Devereaux, art by filthykeren and poetry by IDHAZ.
Check out Sunday Mass every 1st Sunday 8pm on Lowergrand hosted by IDHAZ and Cherub 420.

555 Sounds - Live from Dirtmall

555 Sounds is the musical identity of San Francisco-based artist/producer Christopher Farstad, a project that evokes the surreal and electric ambience of science fiction, often both in and out of time with arrhythmias of shifting psychedelia and trance. On "Live from Dirtmall," fourth-world environments are turned upside down, melded with delayed synthesizer loops in a soundtrack created for a virtual gallery in an abandoned shopping mall.

Sukumar Prasad – Pioneer of Carnatic Electric Guitar

Sukumar Prasad was originally trained as a mridangam artist, but began to adapt Carnatic compositions to electric guitar in the late 1970s. He saw virtually no support from the Indian classical community at the time, who deemed it unacceptable to render classical music on this instrument. This was before the time of U. Srinivas, and no precedent existed for incorporating electric instruments into Carnatic music. His only release, a cassette originally issued in 1985, is long out of print, and he has disappeared from public performance entirely.
