Important note about the 2021 Minnesota Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest:

Changes many of our members have experienced over the last few years have necessitated updates to the Minnesota Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest. These updates have been discussed at the Member Services Committee level, the Better Newspaper Contest Task Force level and the MNA Board of Directors level. On unanimous recommendation from the task force, the MNA Board of Directors at their June 25 meeting unanimously approved the following update to the MNA BNC:
The contest is divided into two primary categories of newspapers — multi-day publications and non-multi-day publications. Multi-day publications are defined as those producing a print publication more than once each week. Non-multi-day publications are defined as those producing a print publication no more than once per week.

Multi-day publications will compete among themselves according to the following circulation (per statement of ownership) split:
Less than 5,000
5,001 to 10,000
More than 10,000

Non-multi-day publications will compete among themselves according to the following circulation (per statement of ownership) split:
Less than 1,000
1,001 to 1,500
1,501 to 3,000
3,001 to 7,000
More than 7,000

The Vance Trophy will be awarded to the top multi-day publication based on total points earned for each winning entry. The Mills Trophy will be awarded to the top non-multi-day publication based on total points earned for each winning entry.

Skeptics or cynics? Age determines how Americans view the news media

BY

For the past few years, Gallup and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation have kept a pulse on the American public’s trust in the media. Recent polling shows that distrust is growing — but not to the same degree for all Americans. Trust in media has generally been increasing over the past few years for Democrats, while trust continues to erode among Republicans.[1] However, new analysis of Gallup/Knight surveys collected in 2019 and 2020 shows that variation in trust is not just between partisans. There are also clear differences by age.

Statement of Ownership Filing for October Deadline

The publisher of each publication sent Periodicals Class Mail, including foreign publications accepted at Periodicals rates, must file Form 3526 by Oct. 1 of each year at the original entry post office. If Oct. 1 falls on a Saturday, the post office would expect to receive it by close of business on Sept. 30 (today).

Minnesota Newspaper Association also requests that all member newspapers send a copy of their statement of ownership to Cynthia Chapin at cynthia@mna.org or by fax to 612-342-2958.

The information provided on Form 3526 allows the U.S. Postal Service to determine whether the publication meets the standards of Periodicals mailing privileges. Newspapers with electronic subscriptions to claim will also use Form 3526x.

Link to the postal form: https://about.usps.com/forms/ps3526.pdf
Link 3526x  https://postal-form-3526-x.pdffiller.com/

The required information also must appear in an issue of the publication whose primary mailed distribution is produced:
• Not later than Oct. 10 for publications issued more frequently than weekly.
• Not later than Oct. 31 for publications issued weekly or less frequently, but more frequently than monthly.
• For all other publications, in the first issue whose primary mailed distribution is produced after Oct. 1st.

The ‘Blue Shirt’ Won. Is That the Best We Can Do?

By Jim Pumarlo

Local names and faces are the lifeblood of community newspaper content.

There’s no better way to spotlight your readers than through photos. After all, “a picture is worth a thousand words” – right? I rephrase. A picture can be worth a thousand words.

The most interesting story will go unread if it has a nondescript headline.

The best photos will have little meaning without adequate explanation. Read: Identify the people in photos.

“Nameless” photos always have bothered me. When I sat behind the editor’s desk, photographers and reporters knew better than to submit photos without identification.

The unfortunate practice is becoming more widespread, an observation passed along by Fred Noer of Burlington, Wis., who had a long career working for publications. In some instances, he notes, photos are absent any cutlines.

Identifying individuals satisfies everyone, he correctly notes – “those in the photo, their families and friends who recognize the people photographed, and the publication for having preserved its credibility.”

He adds: “If a reader does not know the people in a photo, how is he or she supposed to find out? The publication is obligated to provide that information – for the readers as well as for the people in the photos.”
