Faith Lutheran Did Not Sleep

Jane Ford, Stewardship Chair of Faith Lutheran Church in Kitchener, Ontario, shares some reflections on how the congregation continued God's mission and ministry to others, even amid pandemic restrictions.

"The Lord had not forgotten our needs and those of others. He reassured and nudged us onwards... He provided clarity and a desire to care for others during the lockdowns. It was not only about what we couldn’t do; rather, we balanced it with what we could do."

We Don't Belong To Ourselves

“For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself.”
- Romans 14:7

Many people in this world believe very strongly that they are their own boss. All they have is theirs and no one else can tell them what to do with their lives or their stuff. But as Christians, we have a different understanding. We know that we just don’t belong to ourselves. We belong first of all to God, and, through Him, we belong to our neighbours. We are here to serve God in our service to one another. God has called you to this service through your vocation. As a Christian, you serve others in the church; as a neighbour, you serve others in society; and as a son or daughter, husband or wife, father or mother, you serve your family.

This Christian worldview sets us apart in all that we do and can especially set us apart when it comes time to distributing all the material blessings that God has showered upon us during our life. Sure, we have a duty to provide for our family, but in service to our Father, we also have an opportunity to be a blessing to others through the work of the church. Our support of the church through a gift in our will, enables others to come to know what a relationship with God looks like. With proper planning, we can bless our families and the ministries we have loved all our lives.

Lutheran Foundation Canada can help you create wonderful plans that reflect wise stewardship decisions, pleasing to God. For more information, please visit www.lutheranfoundation.ca or speak to one of our regional Gift Coordinators.

Are two (or three) heads better than one? Many people may wonder if naming more than one executor is a good thing. Don’t confuse this with naming an alternate executor, which means you name a person to act as executor only if your first choice cannot or will not perform the duties. Parents will sometimes name all their children as co-executors because they believe it doesn’t show any favouritism. However, unless your estate is complex, you may be adding potential cost, conflict, and inconvenience by naming more than one executor. Consider that co-executors must all work together, agree on everything, and are all held responsible for the estate as a team or group. None has the legal right to act alone. This can be especially difficult if your children don’t get along or even if they simply live in different provinces. Before naming multiple executors, make sure you consider all the implications of your decision.

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (Proper 21B)
(September 26, 2021)

James 5:(1–12) 13–20
Mark 9:38–50

Christ Jesus, the Son of God, Cares for Us and Serves Us with the Forgiveness of Sins

When the people of Israel wept, complaining that they had no meat to eat (Num. 11:4), Moses cried out to the Lord that “the burden of all this people” was too heavy for him and that he was “not able to carry all this people alone” (Num. 11:11–14). So the Lord had Moses gather “seventy men of the elders of Israel” (Num. 11:16), and the Lord “took some of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders” (Num. 11:25), so that Moses would not carry the burden alone. All who thus labor are honored, and all the people are cared for, in the name of the Lord (Mark 9:39–41). Everything is done with reference to Christ Jesus. So we cling to Him, and we flee from all sins that would separate us from Him (Mark 9:42–48). The life of the Church is one of repentant faith in Christ. Christians confess their sins to one another, and they “pray for one another,” that each would be raised up and healed by the Lord Jesus, who covers “a multitude of sins” and saves our souls from death (James 5:15–20).
