Learning from mistakes

Three Canadian university professors explore the lessons other countries can learn from the way cannabis was handled in Ontario.

By Joseph Aversa, Tony Hernandez and Jenna Jacobson

In October 2018, Canada became the first G20 country to legalize the recreational use of cannabis. Over the past three years, the province of Ontario — to name just one Canadian jurisdiction — has moved away from having a significantly under-serviced retail market to one that is heavily saturated.

The Cannabis Act (Bill C-45) provided the rules and regulations around the production, distribution, sale and possession of cannabis. However, there are significant differences in each province’s and territory’s retail framework — private, public or hybrid — and the legal age for consumption, purchasing options and personal possession limits.

Was the rollout a success or failure? When analyzing the evolution of an illegal-to-legal retail market, our recent study found considerable consumer discontent with at least one province’s cannabis retailing approach. Our research examines how consumers have reacted to cannabis retail in the province of Ontario.

Tenzo launches its first vapes

Avant Brands has shipped its first drop of Tenzo vape cartridges to the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS).

The one-gram, 510-thread vape carts are made with Tenzo’s flagship cultivar, Watermelon Mojito Zkittlez. A second cart is expected in the near future, based on Tenzo’s popular Wedding Crasher cultivar.

“Entering into concentrates, which is the second largest consumption category, with our Tenzo vape cartridges marks a pivotal milestone as we continue to execute on our market growth strategy,” says Norton Singhavon, founder and CEO of Kelowna-based Avant Brands.

Salted caramels by Chüz

Salted caramels made by Chüz are a sugary treat.

They taste similar to popular old-school ones, but are less chewy; rather, they have a fudge-like texture.

The effect hit quickly and lasted about four hours.

A package of Chüz costs about $6.99 and there are two caramels, which come individually packed in little plastic cups. The individual containers feel like packaging overkill, but are perhaps intended to keep the caramels easily portioned instead of mushing together while in transit.

Each one has 5 mg of THC for a total of 10 mg. There is no CBD.

They are made in Cranbrook at Dycar Pharmaceuticals by a dessert and confectionery chef.

Chüz uses MCT oil to infuse cannabis extracted through a CO2 process. There are 50 calories and seven grams of sugar per pack.

If you like sweets, Chüz is worth a try.
