Rooted and Established (Dependence Part 1)

Ephesians 3:17-21

. . . so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Reflect

How can you know something that is beyond knowledge? This seems like intentionally confusing mysticism or spiritual hyperbole. But Paul is not hiding something here. He’s cracking open the door and inviting us to understand.

There’s only one way to know something that is beyond knowledge. You experience it.

That’s what he’s getting at. He is inviting us to put down our roots and be established in this wide, long, high, deep love of Jesus. Through this rooting we will be infused with power that is beyond us. Our roots in this rich soil draw on the immeasurable as he fills us to the measure of the fullness of God. As the reach of the branches and the birth of the fruit are dependent on the roots and the soil, so our faith is utterly dependent on the one in whom we are rooted and established.

We should dream and innovate and pioneer. We should create and experiment and feel out the edges of what’s next. But we must do this and all things out of being rooted and established. This will be the difference between branches stretching wide and high and becoming a tumbleweed blown by every breeze.

Pray

Jesus, root me in the depth and width and height and length of love. Establish me in the experience of you that goes beyond what can be otherwise known. Let me know you and be filled with the fullness of the immeasurably more. Amen.
