Dear Fossil Free SA supporter,

As climate strikers around the world gear up for a
Global Day of Climate Action on September 24th, youth leaders, civil society groups and grassroots movements are organising actions across South Africa in the same week with many actions happening on Wednesday 22 September.

In Cape Town, protesters will assemble at Parliament at 11am on Friday 24 September. (Please mask, distance and be vaccinated.)

The theme for the global actions is “Uproot The System'' and as such, this campaign will be pushing to #UprootTheDMRE: mobilising for a just energy and mining future in South Africa.

Watch Politically Aweh's brilliant and hilarious satirical video featuring Siv Ngesi. The video calls out the DMRE's damaging practices and draws attention to the nationwide mobilisation. Watch it here >
Read David Le Page's piece in Business Day discussing the urgency for Gwede Mantashe and the DMRE to shift from coal and gas to renewable energy! Read it here >

The DMRE is one of the biggest stumbling blocks to a just transition. Not one new renewable energy project has been approved in SA since 2015 – while Vietnam built the renewable energy equivalent of six coal power plants last year alone. Under Mantashe, South Africa's progress on energy transition has slowed to a crawl, ranked 110 out of 115 countries assessed in the World Economic Forum's 2020 assessment.

The DMRE ignores the voices of those most impacted by energy planning decisions, leaving many without access to basic electricity and approving polluting projects. Climate justice and our shared energy future demand action.

Head to
uprootthedmre.org to find an action near you and show support for the action by signing up to publicly support.

Onwards,

David, Sarah, and the Fossil Free SA team
