Welcome to this week's issue of The Birthday Workbook!

This week, we read about a call for empathy for people with dementia. Nur Farhan Mohammad Alami writes about the need to pay attention to the various issues to do with ageing.

Before you read the article, watch the following video and answer these questions:
  • Pay attention to your feelings as you watch the video. Why are you feeling the things you do?
  • Is there anyone you know who could be experiencing this stage of life?
  • Who are the people around you who could find this video useful?
Now, read the article:
Read on Today
Consider the following questions:
  1. "Apparently things didn’t go well during the consultation with the specialist. I imagine the patient was uncooperative as the specialist wrote me an exasperated reply which read: “Dear Doctor Farhan, this patient’s problem isn’t in his ears but what’s in between them!!”" The writer said that "it smacked of ageism and a deep-seated discrimination towards the elderly." Why might the statement represent "discrimination"?
  2. The writer mentioned several struggles that people with dementia might face. What might these be?
  3. “The idea of ageing in place, within our existing homes would be the way ahead.” What are some initiatives the writer suggests to help us “age in place”?
  4. How would you describe the overall tone of the writer's letter?
  5. The writer mentioned several ways that the healthcare system treats older individuals. Do you agree or disagree with how they are treated, and why?
  6. How might this essay change the way you approach old age for yourself?
Further Resources:
  • Lien Foundation, "HACK CARE" - I cannot recommend this enough. This publication will make you think of design in an empathetic way. What would it look like if we could reconfigure the everyday-things in our lives to the stages of our lives?
  • Dementia-Friendly Singapore provides many useful resources and links. "Dementia-Friendly Singapore"
  • Dementia Singapore is a social service agency that supports a dementia-inclusive Singapore, "Dementia Singapore"
We hope you enjoyed this week's issue of the Birthday Workbook!

We are excited to share with you that our very first UnConference will be happening this coming Saturday, on 25 September, 2-5.30pm on Zoom!

You know we believe in the forward nudging power of an open, constructive and insightful ground-up conversation, even about the difficult stuff.

Think of all the cool, amazing conversations you’ve had outside of the main conference agenda and add being able to influence the content of the conference… and you’d in the ballpark of what an unconference could be. It’s an inside out teabreak; it’s all the cool conversations you’ve had stacked upon each other without the strict conference rules and panels.

It’s an UnConference!

That's all for this week! Stay safe, take care, and feel free to write to us with your thoughts or feedback!
