Greetings! It's been awhil– hang on, check this out first:

That's a photograph (not an illustration) by Pham Huy Trung of Cao Bang, Vietnam. Fantastic.

Ok, I'm back and so, after a too-short late summer break, is this newsletter. Let's get right to it and see what's been happening on the internet and at kottke.org recently.

Watch Bourdain's First Travel/Food TV Show for Free Online

The entire run of A Cook's Tour, Anthony Bourdain's first food & travel show from the early 2000s, is available to watch online for free. Very much a prototype for what became the beloved No Reservations & Parts Unknown.

See also a 2000 piece by Anthony Bourdain about 24 hours in the life of his restaurant, Les Halles, from the New Yorker archive. "For the weekenders, a saddle of wild hare stuffed with foie gras is not a good special."

The Best Drone Photos of 2021

The Winners of the 2021 Drone Photo Awards. Tiny doses of the overview effect in photographic format.

Black Film Archive

Black Film Archive is a collection of links to ~250 films made by Black filmmakers & actors from 1915 to 1979 that are available to stream online. Great resource.

This Bird Speaks for All of Us

This grave fellow is among the finalists for the 2021 Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards.

The Texas Switch

The Texas Switch is a filmmaking technique in which an actor and stunt person are switched seamlessly during a single shot -- the actor steps out of the frame or behind a prop and the stunt person steps in (or vice versa).

So Big, So Smol

Delve into the microscopic world with the winners of Nikon's Small World Photomicrography Competition for 2021. (That's a horsefly eye at 40X magnification.)

And Finally...

This was cathartic to read: Oh My Fucking God, Get the Fucking Vaccine Already, You Fucking Fucks. "You want a two-month-old to wind up on a fucking ventilator instead of you, a fucking adult, getting a fucking sore arm for a day? What are you, a pitcher for the Yankees?"

I'll see you soon. Stay safe out there.
