Jase Auby
Chief Investment Officer
The Teacher Retirement System of Texas



 
​Jase Auby is Chief Investment Officer for the Teacher Retirement System of Texas. Appointed CIO in December 2019, Mr. Auby has oversight over one of the largest investment funds ($160 billion) in the world. The Trust’s asset allocation consists of Global Equity (54%), Stable Value (includes fixed income and hedge funds, 21%), Real Return (21%) and Risk Parity (8%). The allocation sums to 104% and therefore has leverage at the asset allocation level. Private asset classes within the allocation total 35% and include private equity, real estate as well as energy, natural resources and infrastructure. TRS is a pioneer among U.S. funds having opened a foreign office in London in 2015. TRS is headquartered in Austin, TX and provides retirement benefits to 1.6 million members and targets a long term return of 7.25%. TRS invests in more than 15,000 businesses in 54 different countries around the world.

Prior to his current role as CIO, Mr. Auby was Deputy Chief Investment Officer, Chief Risk Officer, Co-Chairman of the Management Committee, and head of the Risk Group responsible for managing and budgeting the risk of the overall investment Fund. He oversaw the development and management of innovative investment strategies including risk parity, low volatility equity, reinsurance and currency management.

Prior to joining TRS in 2009, Mr. Auby worked with two startup companies in Austin, TX. Before then, he structured credit securitizations as a part of the structured credit group at Lehman Brothers. Mr. Auby began his career in an investment management industry resource group as a part of the fixed income division at Goldman Sachs. He received a BS in electrical and computer systems engineering from Harvard College and he is a CFA charter holder.
Leda Braga

Leda Braga is the founder and CEO of Systematica Investments, a global institutional hedge fund manager with approximately $8.2 billion in assets under management. Systematica was formed in January 2015 as a spin-off of BlueCrest Capital, where Ms Braga was President and Head of Systematic Trading for 14 years. Prior to BlueCrest, she was part of Cygnifi Derivatives Services (a J.P. Morgan spin-off). At Cygnifi Ms Braga was part of the management team and head of its Valuation Service. Prior to Cygnifi, she spent nearly seven years at J.P. Morgan as a Quantitative Analyst in the derivatives research team. Her past experience includes modelling of interest rate exotics, FX/interest rate hybrid instruments and equity derivatives.

Ms Braga holds a PhD in Engineering from Imperial College London, where she worked as a lecturer and led research projects for over three years prior to joining J.P. Morgan. In addition, she has served in the advisory board of the pension fund of the CERN in Geneva and currently serves on the advisory board of the London School of Economics’ Systemic Risk Centre.

Ms. Buchan is Chief Executive Officer of Martlet Asset Management, an advisor to the Financial Data Professional’s Institute and a SBAI Trustee. 

Prior to founding Martlet, Jane was Chief Executive Officer of PAAMCO, a fund of hedge funds, which she helped found in 2000.   In 2021 and 2020, Jane was named to the Barron's 100 Most Influential Women in US Finance and in 2015 she was named to the Investhedge Hall of Fame. 

Jane holds both a PhD and an MA in Business Economics (Finance) from Harvard University. She earned a BA in Economics from Yale University.

Luke Ellis is CEO of Man Group, a global active investment firm. Man Group has five investment engines (Man AHL, Man Numeric, Man GLG, Man FRM and Man GPM), which manage USD 135.3 billion (as at 30 June, 2021) in a range of liquid and private markets. As CEO, Luke leads the firm’s Executive Committee, working with teams across investment, distribution, technology and infrastructure, while seeking to deliver the right outcomes for clients and positioning Man Group to adapt to opportunities as markets evolve. With a central objective to deliver alpha for clients through time, Man Group provides a wide range of alternative and long-only portfolio solutions for its client base.
 
Luke joined Man Group in 2010 and was previously President of the firm, responsible for management across investment engines. Prior to this, he was Chairman of Man GLG’s Multi-Manager activities and was Managing Director of Man FRM from 1998 to 2008. Luke was previously a Managing Director at JPMorgan in London and Global Head of the firm’s Equity Derivatives and Equity Proprietary Trading businesses.
 
He holds a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and Economics from Bristol University.
 
Maria Long

Maria Long joined the SBAI as Research & Content Director in August 2020. She is responsible for content development and co-ordination of the ongoing and future working groups on a wide variety of topics, including governance, insurance linked strategies, standardisation of disclosure, valuation, alternative credit, responsible investment, asset management regulation and compliance as well as new topics to be determined in the future.

Prior to the SBAI, Maria spent 12 years at Man FRM, most recently in Operational Due Diligence (2015-2020) and before that as Head of FRM Middle Office (2008-2015). Maria also has worked in Fund Administration in Dublin and in Operations at Investment Managers in London.

Maria received an BSc Natural Sciences (Astronomy & Planetary Science) with First Class Honours in 2017 from The Open University.
Phillip M. Meyer
General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer & Co-Chief Operating Officer 
Oasis Management Company 
Phillip Meyer joined Oasis in 2007 and serves as the global General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer, and Co-Chief Operating Officer for the Oasis Group. Based in Hong Kong, he is responsible for providing legal advice to the Oasis Group and managing its legal and regulatory affairs on a global basis, as well as overseeing all non-investment aspects of the firm’s business, including infrastructure, IT and data security, business development and fund distribution, human resources, and he co-leads the firm’s finance and trade operations teams.  

Mr. Meyer received a B.A. in English from The University of Texas at Austin, graduating with high honors, and he received a J.D. from Cornell Law School, where he was Note Editor for the Cornell International Law Journal. 

Mr. Meyer is licensed as an attorney with the New York State Bar and is an associate member of the Hong Kong Law Society.  

He is the Chair of the Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA) Hong Kong Executive Committee and Co-Chair of the AIMA Hong Kong Regulatory Committee; serves on the Human Capital Committee of the Hong Kong Financial Services Development Council (HKFSDC); is a member of the Standards Board for Alternative Investments (SBAI) Culture & Diversity Committee for APAC; is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute (HKSI) and a member of the HKSI Education Committee; sits on the Board of Directors of the Association of Corporate Counsel Hong Kong (ACC) and serves as Co-Chair of its Financial Services Committee; and co-chairs the Sohn Hong Kong Investment Conference planning committee for the Karen Leung Foundation.  

Mr. Meyer was named to The Legal 500’s inaugural “GC Powerlist: China & Hong Kong” in 2017 and the Oasis Legal Team was named to the GC Powerlist: Hong Kong Teams 2019.  

Mr. Meyer is a frequent speaker on topics related to financial markets, regulatory compliance, ethics, internal investigations, financial services legal issues and trends, in-house legal and compliance department management, hedge fund operations and management, shareholder activism, and ESG topics, including firm diversity and inclusion.
Mario Therrien

Mario Therrien leads CDPQ’s investment funds activities. The teams he oversees invest in private investment funds and credit in private markets, as well as in venture capital in Québec and internationally. They are also responsible for external management in equity markets, as well as developing and managing strategic and institutional relationships. His mandate consists of adding value by building portfolios with the best external managers, while improving in-house management through the sharing of knowledge and expertise. He sits on the Investment-Risk Committee.

Prior to this role, Mr. Therrien was Senior Vice-President and Head of Strategic Partnerships, Developed Markets. He joined CDPQ in 1993 as an Analyst before taking on the role of Portfolio Manager in the group responsible for absolute return activities. Subsequently, he was mandated to develop external management activities in liquid-asset classes.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and a Master’s degree in Finance from Université de Sherbrooke. He has also completed the Canadian Securities Course given by the Canadian Securities Institute, and is a CFA charter holder.
