‘HEAD’ Lines

DNA

Dear Parents/Carers

At the end of the summer term, Mr Chapman (Head of History) asked me if I would take a DNA test – slightly random request of the Headteacher you may think? As part of our History curriculum students are leaning about the British Empire, what has influenced its development, and as a consequence, the multicultural society we now live within. It will be really interesting to find out what I’m made of!

Next week we will be holding our Open Evening. Thursday Evening will be an opportunity for parents of year 5 and 6 students to find out about John Hanson’s DNA.

We are looking forward to welcoming year 5 and 6 students and their parents to our wonderful place of learning and having the opportunity to show how we attempt to INSPIRE our young people, how we put the CARE of our young people at the heart of everything we do, and how a combination of inspirational education and care combine to give every child the opportunity to be the best version of themselves possible.

If you have a year 5 or 6 child, we look forward to seeing you. If not, please spread the word.

Enjoy the weekend with your children.

Regards
Russell Stevens

Fairthorne Manor
What started as a gloomy and foggy day on Thursday ended as a day of sunshine and excitement, as half of Year 7 went on their first school trip at John Hanson to Fairthorne Manor. With activities such as Jacob's Ladder, Crate Challenge, Low Ropes, Archery, Fire Lighting and an Aerial Assault Course, Year 7 were challenged to be brave, resilient, and to work as a team in their smaller groups. During our break times, Year 7 were full of energy, keen to discuss what they had been up to with their friends, and full of anticipation about the afternoon's activities. The tutor team are very proud of how all students rose to the challenge of the day. Well done Year 7!

"It was very fun, and I liked the Jacobs Ladder the most because it was very hard, and we had to use teamwork to get up it" - Brody

"I liked all of the activities, especially the fire lighting because we got to use equipment that I've never seen before like a flint and steel" - Jake
Memorial Garden

Mrs Hall and Miss Coster will be meeting with the bereavement group over the next couple of weeks, and as part of that we will be working on getting the memorial garden winter ready.  As such, if you would like to donate any plants, or spring bulbs, or pots (no plastic ones please as they blow over in the wind) then we would really appreciate them being delivered to reception.  Equally, if you have any links to local garden centres/nurseries who you think would help us out with plants then please do get in contact with anna.hall@jhanson.hants.sch.uk
Please encourage your son/daughter to use their SCHOOL EMAIL for work rather than their own private email. This is important for safeguarding and also some of our messages for students are being sent to school email addresses.

KS3 English Project
Every half term in English, students in KS3 are set a project linked to their work in lessons. They are challenged to be creative and to use their independence to create exciting examples of work. Despite the projects only being set last week, we have already received a brilliant model of 'Eel Marsh House' from Susan Hill's novel, The Woman in Black. Well done to Oscar and Noah in Year 9; their model now has pride of place in Mrs Ferris' classroom.

Phishing Attacks

The last year we have seen a huge increase in phishing attacks. In particular there was a large amount of pandemic related phishing emails. Google’s Threat Analysis Group reported in mid-April that they blocked 18 million COVID-19 themed malware and phishing emails per day.

Phishing attacks are still the most common cause of cybersecurity breaches. Current figures clearly reflect the need for awareness of phishing attacks as research suggests
91% of successful cyber attacks are the result of a phishing scam.
Although people are increasingly aware of phishing, it is still a growing threat in 2021, in part due to lack of awareness regarding how it works and how to prevent it from happening. Here is what you can do to avoid phishing attacks:
  1. Do not open emails from people you do not know!

Even if it appears to be from someone you know, check that the email address is accurate.
  2. Carefully check links!

Do not click any links before hovering over the link with your mouse. If the link does not look trustworthy, do not click it.
  3. Look out for typos!

Phishing scams are infamous for having typos and it is a good indicator that you need to proceed with caution.
  4. Use multi-factor authentication!

It is recommended to have two forms of verification, such as a password and a security question. This makes it much more difficult for cyber criminals to access your details.
