The National Registry is evolving the way Paramedic and AEMT candidates are assessed for minimum competency by introducing an updated Advanced Life Support (ALS) examination while sunsetting the psychomotor examination.

You may already have heard some things about this new examination experience which will roll out over the next 24 months, so we created a website to provide more information and keep you up to date.

Check out the new ALS Website

Why are we doing this?

The National Registry is responding to feedback from the EMS community and to data provided by the 2019 ALS Practice Analysis. The EMS Community and the Practice Analysis both support the testing of soft skills such as clinical judgment, leadership, and communications as essential components of EMS care. Technological advances make it possible to do better assessments using computer-based examinations.

What is the timeline?

The National Registry is in the beginning phases of developing updated processes for the AEMT and Paramedic certification levels. Full implementation is expected by mid-2023.

Who is involved?

The National Registry is collaborating with the EMS community to make this update impactful. An ALS Redesign Expert Panel was created to ensure inclusivity, diversity of thought, and input from many different areas of the EMS community. Additional panels will be convened to review and provide input on proposed changes at a more detailed level.
