Democrats Celebrate Small Business Week
President Biden re-designated September 12-15, as National Small Business Week. May 2-7 was originally National Small Business Week and Democrats nationwide celebrated small business, including events and press-releases from Maine, Minnesota and North Carolina highlighting the benefits of Biden’s American Rescue plan for restaurants, farmers, arts non-profits and other small businesses, and this is an opportunity to again highlight the great work Democrats and the Biden-Harris Administration has done for small business. The updated Small Business Week included a national small business summit headlined by White House speakers, SBA Administrator Isabella Guzman and small business leaders.
Democratic Infrastructure Plans Help Small Business

The House and Senate passed a $1.3 Trillion infrastructure bill paid for by reducing the IRS tax gap caused by the Trump “tax reform,” public private partnerships and redirecting FCC 5G auction funds. The plan brings forth all kinds of support for small business including:

  • $65 billion for rural and urban broadband to get affordable broadband into these critically under-served areas.
  • $73 billion for power grid infrastructure to reduce the likelihood of what happened in Texas from happening elsewhere.
  • $56 billion for public transit, including $7.5 billion for electric buses
  • $55 billion for water infrastructure with $5 billion for Western water storage as droughts continue to hit the Western states and Southern and Midwestern states are hit with floods.
  • $109 billion for roads and bridges, $25 billion for airports and $16 billion for waterways and ports.
  • $21 billion in environmental remediation.
September 15th begins Hispanic Heritage Month
DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison and DNC Hispanic Council Chair Iris Martinez released a statement in support of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Hispanic/Latino/Latinx owned businesses were a major part of the Obama small business boom and were largely disregarded by Republicans during the Pandemic.

As Harrison and Martinez noted, “Latino voters used their voting power to put President Biden and Vice President Harris in office, placing their faith in Democrats to deliver for their communities. In the past eight months we’ve done just that. The American Rescue Plan has reduced the number of Hispanics living in poverty by almost 40 percent. The American Rescue Plan has also prioritized ensuring that Latinos and their communities have access to the vaccine and resources necessary to combat COVID-19. . . .And we will continue pushing for the passage of the DREAM Act so that children who have lived here their whole lives can have security in the country they call home.”
May was Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
DNC Chair Jaime Harrison, DNC Vice Chair Senator Tammy Duckworth and AAPI Caucus Chair Bel Leong-Hong (who is a small business owner) released a statement in support of AAPI Heritage Month. Asian-owned businesses were hit hard by the pandemic and the sharp increase in AAPI hate crimes has hurt these businesses. “As Democrats, we know our nation’s diversity is our greatest strength. We must identify and root out systemic racism and xenophobia and give effective resources to law enforcement agencies to combat the growing number of attacks targeting the AAPI community. We must work with communities across the country to improve reporting of race-based violence and encourage prosecutors to hold perpetrators accountable to the fullest extent of the law. We will continue to stand in solidarity with AAPI communities across the country to end this senseless hate.”
🚨 ACTION ALERT🚨
Now that the Senate and House have passed the Budget Resolution and the infrastructure plan, attention is now directed to the $3.5 trillion budget and infrastructure plan based on plans already passed by both houses.  The Senate needs to pass a majority vote for the “Building Back Better Plan” that provides support for seniors and greater investment in small business and the House is reviewing additional portions of the plan.  At present it looks like the measure is 2 votes short and we need to show House Democrats that we have their back just as they have ours.  We encourage everyone to contact their Senator and ask them to support the $3.5 Trillion “Build Back Better Plan.”

Voting rights and ballot access continues to be a priority for all Americans as Republicans roll out more proposals to make voting harder.  The House passed the “John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.” Join Democrats and please contact your Senator to ask them to support H.R. 4.
