The Pier from the east, Brighton
This splendid image dates from the 1890s or the early years of the twentieth century. The works to enlarge the pier head were completed in 1893. The picture shows the extensive new landing stages (and steamers in attendance) and the huge new entertainment pavilion, by far the largest building of its type in the resort.
The beach holds the artifacts of seaside Brighton’s two great industries – fishing and holidaymaking by the sea.
This print is in the Library of Congress prints and photographs online collection. Published by the Detroit Publishing Company, although the image looks like a photograph it is an ‘ink-based photolithograph’ called a photochrom print.
