Los Angeles & Rialto Schools Feeding Kids During COVID Pandemic

Children are heading back to school, and as we continue to navigate the coronavirus pandemic, far too many kids are still living in hunger. As the nation looks ahead toward rebuilding, it's important to remember that feeding kids is a critical part of the pandemic's recovery. Rebuilding starts with feeding every child, in every community.

Check out the No Kid Hungry mini documentary series highlighting the work of Rialto Unified School District in fighting hunger and feeding kids during COVID.  This video parallels the story of many food service departments as they stepped up to feed the students with so much compassion, and fun.

Supporting and Promoting Student Mental Health

The National Center on Afterschool and Summer Enrichment recently released a new brief, Supporting and Promoting Mental Health in Out-of-School Time, that explores some of the current mental health needs of youth, families, and the OST workforce.

The brief specifies the importance in improving mental health in all environments and how afterschool programs have provided one outlet.

Afterschool programs encourage positive mental health through:

  • Minimization of toxic social and biological conditions
  • Reinforcement of diverse pro-social behaviors
  • Limiting opportunities and influences for problem behavior
  • Promoting psychological flexibility in the pursuit of one’s values and goals.

Member Spotlight: Kate McDevitt, San Diego Unified School District

“Moving your policy from a document just sitting on a shelf into meaningful implementation requires strong support from leadership, and broad involvement. Fortunately, our superintendent and our school board decided to make an investment in wellness.”

Kate McDevitt works for San Diego Unified School District as the District's first Wellness Supervisor, and in 2016 launched their now award-winning wellness initiative to support the health and well-being of more than 100,000 students and 10,000 employees. This effort includes a 45-person District Wellness Council with 8 sub-committees representing each area of their wellness policy, and165 school site wellness committees, which provide safe and supportive spaces to connect students and families to integrated social services.

Through their Healthy Schools Program, San Diego Unified’s school site wellness coordinators receive monthly training on wellness tools and resources to assess, plan and improve wellness offerings for students, staff and families.
