October 2021 Newsletter

www.placervillearts.com

Editors Note: I think we can all agree, the last couple of years has been rough on all of us. Hopefully, we can start getting back to normal, whatever that will look like, in the future.

Your PAA board has been working hard to keep art in all of our lives. Many of us have taken on multiple tasks and now we need your help. To continue providing member shows, content at general meetings, opportunities for artists, and much more, we would appreciate anyone who can, to volunteer a bit of your time. There is something for everyone, from tiny tasks to large. You tell us what you feel comfortable doing and we'll find a fit. Thanks for your consideration.

Please contact Lynell Phillips, President, Placerville Arts Association, at 415-793-2134 or lynellphillips@aol.com

And on that note, I want to thank all of you who have stepped up this year to help keep PAA going in the midst of Covid. I don't think we could have done it with you.

Thank You!!!
Do you want to meet more artists and learn about their process? Are you interested in all types of art? PAA needs a volunteer who is willing to invite and schedule speakers for our 2022 general meetings. We have an ongoing list of artists to invite. And, we will help with the transition so you have fun and are successful. I have enjoyed my time meeting new people and sharing their talents with PAA. It is now time to pass the baton, as I have volunteered for another position in PAA. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Su Wickersham at editor@placervillearts.com

Needed volunteers appreciated

As you can see below, there are many more opportunities to volunteer, and we appreciate any form of assistance you can offer. We have lots of exciting, new ideas, but we need your help to accomplish our goals.

Show Chair and Producer for Mother Lode 2022 – Our big event of the year needs a leader. The bones are in place for this event. The venue is booked. We need a show chair to work with the judge, set up for online entries and otherwise take this event from soup to nuts. The 2021 committee will be on tap to help you through your first year. We hope the person who steps into this position will be interested in doing it again in the future. For 2021, we have formed a committee, and have split the job for a few, instead of just one person. Please consider lending a hand.

Audio Visual Director – Seeking a volunteer to set up our monthly meeting equipment.  We have a budget to purchase a new sound system, microphones and a computer.  We are looking for someone to make it all work together.  We would like to have the capability to Zoom in our live meetings for both presenters and guests.  If you were that AV geek in high school and have continued developing your nerd skills, you are whom we seek.

Video Camera Operator - Looking for a volunteer to record our monthly meetings, edit the recording and post to a YouTube channel.  If this matches your skill set, we would love to have you as part of our team.  We have funding for a camera, computer and software, thanks to a recent grant from The Latrobe Fund and we need a volunteer to help us with this project.

Facebook Reporters Love Facebook, can’t stay off it? Help out PAA. Become an editor for our Facebook page and post articles of interest to artists.

Interested in a volunteer position, contact Lynell Phillips, President, Placerville Arts Association, at 415-793-2134 or lynellphillips@aol.com

October General Meeting
Join us on Zoom for our General Meeting on Sunday, October 17 @ 1:30pm for

Cheryl Gleason, Encaustic

Cheryl Gleason, Encaustic

I want to thank Cheryl for stepping in, as we had a last minute cancellation.

Cheryl Gleason works in many mediums, Painting, Mixed Media, Reclaimed Wood Sculptures, Cold Wax and Oil, and Encaustic. As an encaustic artist Cheryl is completely self taught.

"My encaustic journey started about 6 years ago. As a fan of Bees I really enjoy Oil & Cold Wax and Encaustic the best of all the mediums. Beeswax is just so intriguing in its applications. With Encaustic melting wax and mixing it with Demar Tree Resin Crystals seems like going back to nature. I make my own medium, colors, and often my own substrates. The medium allows for so many types of materials and methods to create unique luminescent results."

What is encaustic? Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated encaustic medium to which colored pigments have been added for creating artworks. Molten medium is applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are sometimes used. The simplest encaustic medium could be made by adding pigments to wax, though recipes most commonly consist of beeswax and damar resin, potentially with other ingredients. For pigmentation, dried powdered pigments can be used, though some artists use pigmented wax, inks, oil paints or other forms of pigmentation. (from Wikipedia)

Art and More

This exhibit will display approximately 500 period hats ranging from the 1800s to the present. Hats from many cultures and countries will fill the rooms accentuated with hat boxes, shoes, handbags and dresses of the time period. This collection was acquired from Barbara Alfidi, Rancho Cordova collector and historian, and tells a story of fashion and culture through the century. This exhibit will run for 6 weeks instead of our normal 3-week exhibit length.

The 2021 Banners on Parade Online Auction is coming! The auction will start on Saturday 10/16/21 at noon and go until Tuesday 10/26/21 at noon. We will be auctioning off all the banners hanging on light poles in downtown Placerville as we do every year. Here is the link for the online auction: https://www.biddingowl.com/
PlacervilleArtonParade
.

You can go to that link any time prior to the auction to look over all the items—you don't need to register to look at the auction items. You will need to register before you can bid. See how to register and about the bidding process on the Placerville Art on Parade website.

Some reminders:
  • The banners will be on display at their respective locations during the auction. They will come down after the auction is over.
  • If you cannot get downtown to see the banners, you can see the banners on the websitedownload the Walking Tour brochure (or pick one up at merchants downtown), or see the video tour of the banners.
  • The opening bid on all banners is $100 and bidding increments will be $20.
  • You can set it up during the registration process so that you can be notified by text message when you have been outbid.
Last year was the first year we used biddingowl.com for the online auction and we had honest feedback from folks who used it that it worked well for them.

This is how Placerville Art on Parade gets the money (along with selling Keepsakes) to do Banners on Parade again in the coming years. We are so grateful for the local community's support each year and we hope to have a successful auction!

Images of Hope is Looking for Art Instructors!

Images of Hope is a local organization whose main mission is to create free opportunities where cancer patients, their family members, and caregivers can come participate in art, movement, and meditative therapy. We do that by providing classes to help give folks a respite and a way to express their feelings in art and movement.

Have you taught an art class that you think might work for this? We would love to hear from you. Some classes are weekly, some are once a month, and they are usually anywhere from one to three hours long. We pay instructors for time and materials. The classes are free to El Dorado County residents.

For more information about Images of Hope, visit ImagesofHopeElDorado.org. If you are interested in teaching a class, contact us via email at ioheldorado@gmail.com or call 530-208-9994.
