Save water and money by letting your lawn go dormant this fall and winter.

FALL IS HERE! LET YOUR LAWN GO DORMANT

Fall arrives this week, on September 22nd. As cooler temperatures creep in, it's nearly time to let your lawn go dormant through the fall and winter months. Although often misunderstood, this process is healthy, normal and beneficial for many reasons:
  • Dormancy helps grow that perfect green lawn for the spring. Warm season grasses (i.e. Bermuda grass) go dormant in the fall and winter so they can return healthier and thicker in the spring.  Establishing cool season grass seed requires weeks of supplemental irrigation and interferes with your lawn's natural "rest and recovery" process. Thus, overseeding with cool season grasses (i.e. rye) is prohibited in the City of Frisco as defined by the Water Management Plan.
  • Let your soil renew its natural supply of organic materials and nutrients.  When your lawn is not allowed to go dormant, it puts unnecessary stress on the root system. Unfortunately, come springtime, a stressed yard often requires more fertilizer and herbicide to green up which can create hazardous runoff and pollution in our watershed.
  • Save yourself time and money as we head into the busy holiday season.  Have you noticed that your lawn's growth rate is already slowing down as the sun sets earlier and the nights become cooler? Would you rather seed, fertilize, water and mow all winter, or spend that time and money doing something fun? Dormancy lets you take a break from from yard work for a few months, while nature runs its course!
  • Cutting back on fall and winter watering = New Year's savings!  You may not realize that the monthly sewer rate for every home in Frisco is derived from that home's average water usage during the winter months.  High winter water consumption leads to higher water bills the upcoming year.
Let's lean into lawn dormancy, Frisco!  Help your lawn rest and recover for spring, spend more holiday time on YOU, plus, enjoy lower water bills in 2022!
FLOWERS FIT FOR "ROYALTY"

This year's "super generation" of monarch butterflies is on the move! These monarchs will overwinter in Mexico, after migrating more than 3,000 miles (some traveling up to 50 miles every day). North Texas is situated squarely in the migration flyway, which means thousands of hungry and tired butterflies are headed our way this fall. The flowering plants in your landscape will be critical sources of food (nectar) and shelter for these monarchs along their journey. Is your landscape ready for a royal visit?

Some plants are better than others for attracting monarchs and other butterflies to your yard. The following native and adapted plants are also drought-tolerant and can stay beautiful for months with very little maintenance! Whether you plant to support the monarchs or just want to show off a beautiful fall landscape, Plant SMART Frisco has show-stopping fall color to inspire you. This award-winning resource, specifically created for Frisco residents, uses information from the Texas Smartscape database and other authoritative horticultural resources.
