The Cello Museum Weekly Newsletter

Volume II | Number 38 | 18 September 2021

Happy birthday, Cello Museum!

On September 18, 2020, the Cello Museum opened its virtual doors - and they haven't closed since. That is the beauty of an online museum. We are so glad that you have been part of our first year and look forward to many more.

This is a brief summary of what you will find in this newsletter - clicking the links in this section will jump you to that part of the email for more details (and better pictures).

This week, our featured article is Dr. Leonovich's exploration of musical hoaxes in the cello world. We also have a summary of
online concerts and events.

Our limited edition Cello Museum first anniversary items are now available in our Museum Shop. Be sure to pick them up before they are gone.

Paper is the traditional gift for a first anniversary, so this week's featured exhibition cello is Chris Tsonias' environmentally-friendly creation made from recycled paper. For a closer look at this and other unique constructions, tour our current exhibition, Innovations in Cello-Making Materials.

We are happy to share the birthday joy - our Cello Birthdays feature continues on our website, though we haven't forgotten our social media. These posts celebrate cellists, composers, luthiers, and others with strong ties to the cello world.

Mark your calendar (and check your clock) - our September Cello Book Club will meet Sunday, 26 September.

Congratulations to the winners of our first composition contest!

In addition to his featured article, Dr. Leonovich has a new edition this week as well as a new post on his own blog with additional information about the piece.

Finally, our curator, Dr. Brenda Neece, has a note to share some of her thoughts on this anniversary of our opening.

Thank you for reading -- enjoy this week's content!

Cello Birthdays
Our Cello Birthdays series recognizes those who are (or have been) part of the cello world, including cellists, composers of cello music, cello makers, and authors of cello books.

Let us know about any birthdays we should consider adding to our series.

Please keep in mind that we highlight those where we can find media (videos, photos, audio recordings) that we can share online.
September Book Club
It's hard to believe the time is passing so quickly, but our September Book Club meeting is just around the corner.

This month, our featured selection is Mellow Cello: A Collection of Short Stories for Cellists. We are excited that author (and cellist) Gill Tennant will join the Zoom discussion on 26 September 2021 at 7 PM London / 2 PM New York / 11 AM Los Angeles.

In addition to reading the book, be sure to check out our review. You do not have to read the book ahead of time to attend the meeting. (We won't have a pop quiz - this time!)
Congratulations, contest winners!

Curator's Note
Dear Cello Friends,

It is time to celebrate! A year ago today, we opened our online museum - the first of its kind, conceived as being completely virtual even before the pandemic started.

Over the year, our team has grown, we’ve met wonderful people, and we’ve spread the love of the cello around the world. Thanks to those who have been with us from the beginning and to those who have joined us along the way, and a warm welcome to our new friends.

This said, what would you like to see in the future? We’ve had some responses to the survey we sent out, but not as many as I had hoped. We are going to continue updating and revising our content this coming year, and we value your input.

Please do take this quick survey (or email me) to indicate your favorites from our current museum content options
You may have noticed that we have no cello news roundup for you this week. After 52 weeks of weekly cello news, I have decided to switch to presenting the news on an ad hoc basis, at least for now.

I hope you’ll sign up for a chance to win a prize in our giveaways over the next four weeks - remember to submit your entry (e.g.: send me an email). Just like public radio, you only need to enter once to be eligible to win the drawing each week. Good luck!

Before closing for the week, I also want to wish one of our anonymous patrons a
very happy birthday! You know who you are. Thank you for helping to make the Cello Museum possible.

Today is a very special day for the Cello Museum. Thank you for joining me on this cello journey!

Please stay in touch. I always love to hear from you!
