 40th Anniversary of the
United Nations International Day of Peace
The International Day of Peace (Peace Day) is held annually on September 21st.  Over the years, Peace Day has grown from a single event of a few hundred people into a global movement that reaches hundreds of millions of people around our world. Peace Day, as established by unanimous United Nations resolution in 1981, provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace. David Wick, Executive Director of the Ashland Culture of Peace Commission, was among the early promoters of Peace Day and was an organizer of the first large-scale civil society Peace Day celebration in San Francisco in 1984step toward awareness of the Culture of Peace.

This Culture of Peace may be our own environment being in silence, prayer, and meditation. Or it may be in shared virtual events or Covid safe events in person. The United Nations theme this year is “Recovering Better for an Equitable and Sustainable World” which will focus Peace Day observers on initiatives and practices to create a world that works for this and future generations.
