"Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower"
– Albert Camus

Time flies! High temperatures and lingering humidity don't make us feel like the summer is over, yet now we see the signs of fall and record the typical autumn coloration of leaves. Many flowers and fruits have passed, and we are waiting to see the flower buds swell from our late bloomer–the American witch-hazel (the banner of this newsletter showcases its flower). We've been busy all summer long coaching EwA's wonderful summer interns, Kate and Olivia (read their testimonials here), leading public biodiversity events, and running plant, wildlife, and habitat surveys with our citizen scientists. We've further developed the content of the EwA site–an important resource for our community. One critical item that we've added is the EwA Acknowledgement of Biodiversity, Land, and People (read it here).

This fall, join our many events as a guest, as a citizen scientist, or as a volunteer: we'll be showing our community the countless wonders of our urban nature habitats in autumn while documenting the recurring seasonal cycles of fauna and flora. What makes our program unique is that there is truly something for everyone. Happy Fall to All!

EwA Fall Events
Studying Nature's Cycles & Helping Wildlife Together
EwA's autumn walks and biodiversity and climate monitoring field sessions are now scheduled and listed on EwA's Eventbrite page. They are wonderful opportunities to learn about the natural history of our region and discover the great biodiversity it hosts. You'll marvel and learn a ton with our talented and passionate naturalists.

Below are a few of those events ↓ Check the EwA Calendar for the full list.

One more thing... We often add last minute EwA walks that we announce in our public forum a few days prior. Local organizations have also invited us to talk or to co-lead some of their events. These are about to be scheduled. Join EwA's listserv/forum to hear about them!
Monthly Fells Forest Explorations. Join Kathy and Claire in the woods on the second Saturday of every month. Explore the biodiversity and ecology of the Fells with us and investigate how the passing of seasons affects and shapes the plants and wildlife of this beautiful urban forest. We can tell you already: Fall is busy in the forest. You'll see a lot with us! [Details & Registration →]
Intro to Plant & Wildlife Monitoring for Conservation. There's a lot you can do to help nature! Join EwA's biodiversity and phenology leaders for a casual intro on how to observe and record the plants, insects, and animals at EwA's diverse urban study sites (here at the Somerville Growing Center). [Details & Registration →]
Nature Observation & Documentation Walk. Every 4th Saturday, Bill and Joe lead a casual walk to observe and record the great biodiversity of the Middlesex Fells Reservation. They are keen naturalists and incredible spotters. One always learns something new on these walks! [Details & Registration →]

Connecting with Nature - Open Science
Help us Help Urban Biodiversity
Cities have much to offer nature-wise and can host little oases such as the Fresh Pond Reservation, where we study the seasonal life cycle of a meadow. Check EwA October's Almanac of that special place! » here

At EwA, we connect deeply with nature through co-creative citizen science. Our model is one of science by the people, benefiting both People and Nature. Together we gain knowledge of our ecosystems and help the conservation of species interactions. Where we live in Massachusetts, our communities get a chance to experience what this means first-hand with EwA's Nature Documentation program.

EwA's Seasonal Activities
The changing of the seasons offers a great opportunity to learn more about the nature around you. Check out these helpful EwA articles!
Documenting Species Like a Pro » Get a naturalist mindset. Explore a great app and how to help scientists all over the world with our photo observations. Learn what kind of information to record.
Fall Season Celebration » If you live in the city like many of us do, you’re closer to nature than you think. Here is an EwA activity to help notice and appreciate the nature on your sidewalk.
EwA Community
Meet our Leaders, Interns, Citizen Scientists & Naturalists
We spend countless hours in the field with our guests and volunteers. This summer alone, we received 335 volunteer visits and spent a total of about 770 hours together in the field. That doesn't count the time our solo field citizen scientists spent outside monitoring or at our virtual gatherings. In other words, our community makes EwA what it is, and we truly are in awe of that engagement. Thanks, to all of you who come consistently or stop by for a day. We value your presence and support tremendously!
