russian sage by Connie CottinghamI just returned from a trip to Utah. From the Salt Lake City airport to the mountain resort Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) plants were blooming beautifully in landscape plantings.

This fine-textured perennial has tiny, silvery leaves and blue flowers on airy stems that reach about 2-4' tall. This makes a statement, but not a visual barrier, softening a stone wall, concrete street curb, or container planting. Also, the colors blue and silver are two of the best in a garden for softening and blending other colors.

Russian Sage handles heat, drought and deer well in Utah, but also in my Southeastern U.S. garden. I just need to make sure to give it sun and good drainage (wet feet are one thing it cannot handle). It is one plant that can handle a dry slope, west exposure, or an area that gets little extra water.

Love,
     Connie
