Good morning kwippers. Last year, Prince William launched the Earthshot Prize in order to search for inspiring and innovative solutions to problems facing the planet. The 15 finalists of the prize were unveiled yesterday and were selected by experts who were looking for projects that had a "significant positive impact" on people and the natural world. Five winners, each receiving £1m, will be announced in a ceremony in October and will be from five different "Earthshot" categories, which are: Protect and Restore Nature; Clean Our Air; Revive our Oceans; Build a Waste-free World; Fix our Climate. You can learn more about the inaugural 15 finalists here.

Scottish flights go carbon neutral

All Scottish flights will soon become carbon neutral, according to the chief executive of Edinburgh airport. The Scottish capital’s airport already went carbon neutral earlier this year, and now management has set its eyes on a carbon offsetting scheme for every flight leaving the country. They plan to offset the carbon impact of flights through funding solar power for schools or hospitals, heat pumps or insulation for council housing and by decarbonising research by Scottish universities and businesses. However, there are still many questions around the true effectiveness of these carbon offsetting schemes across the globe. The estimated cost of the scheme will be under £5 per passenger for an inter-European flight. The announcement coincides with the beginning of Scotland’s Climate Week and the build-up to the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow in six weeks.

INNOVATION

Healthy instant noodles

Most of us love instant noodles and consider it a kitchen pantry staple, however it's not the healthiest snack. Most instant noodles brands include noodles made of refined carbohydrates that get cooked in oil, while the soup packets are high in sodium and preservatives. Immi is a new brand aiming to change this by offering a plant-based, healthy version of instant ramen and also offering bolder flavours (e.g. Tom Yum 'Shrimp'). Immi is low carb and low sodium, high fiber and has 22 grams of protein on average. Immi has just raised $3.8 million in seed funding which the company plans to split between R&D, hiring and marketing. The global instant noodle space is projected to be a $32 billion industry by 2027, and Immi hopes to capture some of this more mainstream audience by engaging with tasters on TikTok and other social media platforms.
