Highs and lows in Bedford for Team Blyth
4 Blyth juniors took part in the ESAA Combined Events National finals in Bedford this weekend, With Hannah Wilson (Durham), Luke Pichler, Alfie Ward and Emily Bond (all Northumberland) looking to finishe their seasons on a high.

Saturday
Alfie ( senior decathlon), and Luke (junior pentathlon) both had very tough starts to the day. Alfie suffered a hamstring injury during warm up, and whilst he completed the 100m in a great time, he had to withdraw during the long jump.
Luke was involved in a nasty incident in his 1st event the hurdles, taking a tumble off the last hurdle which left him bruised and well down on points. He recovered superbly, and finished with a big 800m PB of 2:26.78 to score 2402pts (an overall pentathlon PB) and finish 15th out of 40.

Sunday
Emliy Bond and Hannah Wilson were part of a massive field of 40 of the best U15 multi-eventers in the country, and the day was a huge learning opportunity as they battled the elements. A solid start in the hurdles for both was followed by a more challenging shot put. Heavy rain provided challenges in the subsequent high jump and long jump, but both girls can be proud to have achieved selection for this prestigious championships and will no doubt be back next year.
Drama, joy, and heartbreak at NECAA Pentathlon!
Closer to home, 6 girls from our combined events team would close their seasons out at the iconic NECAA Pentathlon Championships at Monkton Stadium today. It was a day to remember for all involved.

U13 Girls
Abigail Huntly is an experienced pentathlete, whilst Poppy Wilson was making her multi-event debut. Abi was never able to hit the heights as she was under the weather, but always had a smile on her face as she celebrated her birthday amongst friends. A seasons best in the high jump was a highlight, and despite being near the top of the order she correctly elected to miss the 800m. It was all about learning for Poppy today, as she tried several events for the first time - but she was superb. A solid shot put, a race win in the hurdles, a 4.22m long jump and a 1.43m high jump put her in medal contention heading into the 800m. Despite setting a PB in the 800m, she missed out on a medal by just a fraction, with a 4th place finish,

U15 Girls
Tilly Maughan was taking part in her first ever athletics competition, but she very quickly settled in to the combined events mindset and developed in confidence and stature as the day progressed. Every event was new to her - but the clear highlight was the high jump where she cleared 1.37m, helping her to a 13th place finish overall. Sadie Parker started the day in superbe style with a 4..81m long jump and a new hurdles PB as she headed the standings. Things got more challenging as the day progressed in the high jump and shot put, with Sadie just pushed out of a medal position in the 800m as she finished an agonizing 4th. Senna Gorvett had a day to remember. A huge long jump PB was followed with a very solid hurdles and shot put. Senna then took a huge step up in the high jump with a massive PB of 1.43m leaving her in a great position heading into the 800m. Senna ran an attacking race without any fear, and was rewarded with a 7-second PB and a brliliant silver medal thanks to her 2480pts total.

U17 Women
Millie Train was up against an incredibly strong field, packed with depth. A solid high jump sadly unearthed some injury niggles, putting Millies continued participation into some doubt. However she elected to continue and things went rather well - with a win in the hurdles in the next event. Millie then smashed her shot put PB with 7.70m, before scoring a solid 4.68m long jump. Heading into the final event, Millie was 4th, but within distance of the athletes ahead. She knew what she needed to do. Millie ran a superb front-running 800m as she looked to put a gap between her and the opposition. As the athletes crossed the line, everyone waited for the results and it could not have been closer. Sadly Millie's club record total of 2751pts was only enough for 4th, and she was just 8pts from silver.

It was an emotional and exhausting day for all involved, but they should all be very proud of themselves!
