Mom Cats

I know I’ve said before that I didn’t know I was starting “Thundering Paws Home for Teenage Pregnancy,” but it often looks that way. We have mom cats who are just kittens themselves.

Clover didn’t understand what to do with her kittens. She knew to let them nurse, but didn’t know how to clean them, express their wastes, and nurture them. It’s not that she didn’t want to, she just didn’t know it was her job.

I have no idea how our staff taught her to do this. When I ask the people I believe were instrumental in this schooling, they say things like, “I didn’t do anything,” “I just explained it to her,” “I dunno.” Maybe she just got the idea herself…but I don’t think so. They did something but they just don’t realize what.

She has raised her kittens and she is ready for a home of her own. If you’d like a sweet kitty around 14 months old, Clover is your girl. She would really like to have another kitty to play with.
Yuri with her kittens in March 2021. She is now done with her kittens and is ready for her forever home.
Yuri was the most attentive mom I’ve ever seen. She wouldn’t let her kittens away from her, body. However, when she got up to eat or use her litter box, she didn’t mind if we touched them.

She is now done with them—DONE! She’s spayed and ready for a new home. She is quite picky about who her new people will be, however. She’s not a fan of her foster mom, who’s had to pick her up to go into a carrier and medicate her with our standard dewormer. However, she adores her foster “sister,” a human, and seeks her out for pets and attention.
Autumn getting personal attention from Adoption Coordinator, Victoria at a recent adoption event.
Autumn was found by a kind woman, Patricia, who noticed Autumn's prolapsed uterus. As Autumn is friendly, Patricia could pick her up and take her to the vet. Patricia kindly paid for Autumn’s surgery.

After leaving Autumn with the veterinarian, Patricia and her friends went in search of the kittens. They found the three babies in time to save them. It was early March and still quite cold. Patricia bottle fed the kittens until we could find them a foster home where they could be raised.

A family with two teen girls took the kittens. It was their first experience in bottle baby feeding and they did an excellent job. When Autumn was recovered enough from her surgery, she went to be with her babies. Although the flow of her milk was interrupted by the surgery, she was able to keep Tiki, Nala, and Mufasa clean and warm. The two girls fed them and Autumn did the rest. Autumn was so happy to be reunited with her kittens.

Autumn would like to be an only pet. She likes being with people and she wants to snuggle. You can hold her in your arms as much as you want.
Uschi is still raising her kittens but will be ready soon for her forever home.
Uschi, named after her rescuer, has five, 7-1/2 week old kittens. She’s not quite ready to be adopted yet as she is still raising her five kittens. She’s a pretty, very young, tuxedo kitty.

We have a no-fault return policy. If for any reason, your new pet doesn’t work out in your home, she or he comes back to Thundering Paws and back into our adoption program.

Warning: The Next Article Is Sad.

SMRAS and ACC have been filling up and are looking for fosters to help them save cats and kittens.
It’s sad, but the only way we can stop the sadness is by exposing it and working together.

Municipal shelters which are open intake must take animals surrendered to them. They are overwhelmed with the influx of cats, dogs, and other pets from people left homeless or otherwise strapped from the pandemic.

Both San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter (SMRAS) and Austin Animal Center (AAC) have resumed killing animals for space, that is, killing those that have been there the longest to make cages empty for those coming in.

Thundering Paws has no more space, no more fosters, little funds to help with this situation. Please, if you are in Hays County, foster for SMRAS, us, or for PAWS of Central Texas. If you are in Austin, foster for Austin Pets Alive or Austin Animal Center. If you cannot get anyone to answer your plea for a foster animal, contact me. Cat, kittens, dog, puppies, bunnies—whatever.

Thank you for everything you do for animals, and for Thundering Paws.
