Noongar Enterprise Development Support
Projects enter new delivery phase
The three-year Noongar Enterprise Development Support (NEDS) projects funding period with the Australian Government Department of Social Services has a one-year extension to June 2022. There have been some great outcomes this year but the one we are most excited about is the transition of Robert Miles our Project Officer to Robert Miles owner of ‘Six Seasons Connect’ and consultant to our NEDS project.

In his time with the NEDS project Robert has -
  • Designed and compiled the “Noongar Enterprise Development Support Business Basics” Manual. This has been developed through workshops and working with Aboriginal people and will be an ongoing best practice resource for potential businesses.
  • Worked one on one with Ballardong people interested in setting up a small business enterprise.
  • Overseen the Noongar Art and Tourism Pop-up Studios in York and Northam. Providing a space for potential business people to learn new skills whilst learning about being in an arts and tourism business.
  • Engaged with corporations, departments, local gov’t and organisations to set up a comprehensive network with the aim to support, guide and connect with the right people. Part of this has also been assisting the Shire of Toodyay to develop their Reconciliation Action Plan.
  • Been involved in establishing the Six Seasons Golf Club as a social enterprise for Aboriginal people wanting to learn, play and participate. The club is always looking for players and members and is based at El Caballo. For more go to the club's website.
  • Completed considerable professional development and has now set up a business to provide Aboriginal Business Consulting Services. For the extension year of the NEDS projects he will now be employed as a consultant on both Ballardong and Yued Country (where he also has family).
Aboriginal people interested in setting up a small business or those already operating or working as a hobby are encouraged to contact Robert on admin@sixseasonsconnect.com or 04285 959 084.

The “RDA Wheatbelt Evaluation of NEDS program 2018-2021” for the initial three year contract has been completed. Whilst targets in terms of numbers of businesses have not been achieved, the projects have been extremely successful and the flow on affects for the communities has been quite amazing. Statistics indicate that 10% of the 18-64 years Aboriginal population in the target areas were engaged with over the three years. The evaluation is available on request, please contact admin@rdawheatbelt.com.au

A Case Study Film has been prepared as a way for some of the participants to be able to describe the impact the projects have had. This 8 minute film can be accessed via this link.

The RDA Wheatbelt Director Regional Development recently presented to the RDA Forum in Canberra. The “Building Aboriginal businesses from the inside out” presentation can be viewed here.
