NIHR School for Primary Care Research Funded Projects
The renewed and refreshed NIHR School for Primary Care Research (SPCR) commenced on 1st April 2021. This new phase enables the School to build on progress made in previous funding phases, and conduct research which responds to and meets the needs of local populations and local health and care systems, while addressing the nation’s changing demographics and corresponding impact on disease burdens and service demands.
Distinctive to this new phase of the school, is the explicit aim to strengthen the primary care research sector more broadly, with a requirement for members of the school to share their expertise with non-member institutions. There is a strong emphasis on engaging, collaborating and partnering with institutions beyond the school membership.
We are pleased to announce that the first set of projects in this phase are underway. Over 30 projects have been funded and details can be found here

Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Primary Health Care Competition now open
The SPCR has now open the competition for post-doctoral fellowships, hosted at any of the School’s 9 members. These awards provide funding to cover the costs of a 24 month (if taken full time) fellowship at one of the SPCR members and successful applicants are expected to start their Fellowship in April 2022. Applicants should have a strong academic record and wish to develop a career in primary care research.
The aim of these fellowships is for the fellow to follow an independent research project, publish their research and prepare grant applications to secure future funding (e.g. an NIHR fellowship). The SPCR would particularly welcome applications from allied health professionals, and they will have the option for a part-time Fellowship, to combine it with clinical work. Distinctive to the current SPCR programme is the aim to work more broadly with the primary care research sector.
The application deadline is Monday 1st November 2021 and full details can be found on our website.
