Climate at the ballot box

Today is the final day for Canadians to get their vote on. There have been many takes on which parties promise the most effective action against climate change. But, the question on our latest podcast is, how much do Canadians care?

In spite of a summer of extreme climate-related events, pollster David Coletto says climate change has not become the number one ballot box issue. Yet David does note what he calls a "seismic shift" since 2019.

During the 2019 election, climate change was debated more than ever, with stark differences between the major parties, such that Election 43 is sometimes dubbed the "climate election". This year is different. While just as many Canadians rank climate change among their top concerns, they are now evaluating parties that have painted themselves varying shades of green. There's even a new consensus on the once-polarizing issue of carbon pricing. Coletto hypothesizes that this progress has made climate change less of a partisan issue, and perhaps less of a deciding factor for voters at the ballot box.

This might actually be a victory for Canadians. Election 44 just may mark the moment when Canada's major parties ceased to be bitterly divided over climate change. And rather than voting between taking some action or taking none at all, Canadians can now show their concern about climate change by making more measured decisions about how to act.

How have Canadian attitudes on climate evolved over the past few years? And how is partisan politics responding? Find out while you wait for the outcome of Election 44:
