OCTOBER 2021

The library calendar is full this month! From African animals to Vermont spiritualism, the programs cover a wide variety of topics, indicative of the range of information available here on the library shelves.  Our own Jonathan Silverman, chair of the library board, kicks off the month on October 6 with “Twisted Tree & Clump of Rocks,” a presentation about his upcoming exhibit at the Charlotte Senior Center.  On October 12, Chris Davis, Karina Warshaw and Ruah Swennerfelt bring practical and timely advice about emergency preparedness, inviting us all to be “Ready Together.”  Learn more about the library’s rain garden, why and how to include this kind of feature in your own landscaping, on October 13 with the Lake Champlain Sea Grant. On October 19, Rokeby Director Lindsay Varner shares the local world in her presentation, “Spiritualism and the Robinsons of Rokeby.” The month winds up with a look at Vermont’s early cycling history with Luis Vivanco and a session with author Jess Lahey about her latest book, The Addiction Innoculation.  There are many more activities, including our take-and-make crafts and monthly book group sessions.  We hope that you find them enjoyable and rewarding!
As we move into the colder months of cold and flu season (not to mention ongoing COVID concerns), we’d also like to remind you that October 15 is Global Handwashing Day.  The United Nations has dedicated this “global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.”  Need some handwashing tips? Check out this link from the Wirecutter.

Book Sale News

The annual Charlotte Library Book Sale, sponsored by The Friends of the Charlotte Library, has been a popular and highly anticipated event since its modest start in 1995. As with many of our cherished activities the pandemic has caused us to reimagine the book sale with an eye to safety, so we will be attempting a mini book sale to be held in the new program room during the month of October. We ask for your patience and understanding in this seat-of-the pants operation. Details will follow next week with regard to hours and donation guidelines. So stay tuned!

The Great Vermont Dragon Egg Hunt Winner!

Reed, a super reader and patron of the Charlotte Library, is Charlotte’s new Dragon Master! He proved to be a super sleuth and, with the help of his family, found the clue on a bucolic section of the Charlotte Town Link Trail. He won a genuine Folkmanis Dragon Puppet and a genuine dragon egg.
We hope the dragon search has introduced families to the accessibility and beauty of the Town Link Trail that, when complete, will be a seven-mile-long gravel path connecting Mt. Philo to the West Village and eventually the Town Beach. Thanks to the Trail Committee for being a partner in this fun endeavor.  Print a copy of the map and take a family hike on the trail.

The Great Dragon Hunt was made possible by the Sherburne Library in Killington and the Vermont Department of Libraries.

Library Happenings

Build to Launch

Build to Launch is an exploration of the technology, STEAM concepts and careers behind the Artemis I mission to the Moon. Join the all-new LEGO® Space Team and their NASA Artemis I team counterparts for a 10-week interactive digital learning adventure. With each episode students will find themselves in the shoes of NASA engineers, scientists, and of course astronauts. Through open-ended lessons, students will get hands-on and solve the same types of problems the Artemis I Team faces as they build towards launch!

The Charlotte Library is a learning center for this program. Because the library is currently not hosting groups in person, sign up for weekly online links for this self-directed program for your student to participate from home. The Library has some Lego Education Kits to check out. They are not made specifically for this program but perhaps could be used for some of the lessons.

International Observe the Moon Night is an annual world-wide public engagement program that encourages observation, appreciation, and understanding of our Moon and its connection to NASA planetary science and exploration. On Saturday, October 16, everyone on Earth is invited to observe and learn about the Moon together, and to celebrate the cultural and personal connections we all have with our nearest neighbor. The event occurs in September or October, when the Moon is around a first quarter phase. A first quarter Moon is visible in the afternoon and evening, a convenient time for most participants. For more information about International Observe the Moon Night.
