practice self-care

Self-care can mean different things to different people, but at its core, practicing self-care looks at prioritizing one’s own physical, mental, and emotional health.

Due to our busy lives, the challenges presented by the pandemic, and perhaps a variety of other concerns, it can often feel like we are being pulled in multiple directions at once, with little reprieve. Some people fare better than others amidst such challenges, but at some point in our lives, we all need a moment to reflect on how we feel – i.e. tired, stressed, happy, sad, irritable, numb, etc.

For some people, self-care can incorporate daily wind down activities before bed like reading a few chapters in a book, taking a relaxing bath, or sitting down to watch some guilty pleasure television. For others, it may be through scheduled hair or body treatments, fitness classes, or planned vacations. For many of us, self-care and a sense of fulfillment, can also be found simply in connecting with loved ones – especially these days! Ultimately, self-care can take the form of whatever brings you some sort of mental, emotional, and/or physical peace and joy.

The Health Coach Institute identifies seven types of self-care: emotional, physical, mental, social, spiritual, practical, and professional. Addressing each of these – even in modest ways - can help establish balance and introduce some structure in our (often) chaotic lives.

fitness tip: kickback your fitness!

Kickbacks are a great way to work your triceps! To perform kickbacks using a bench for support, hold a dumbbell in one hand in a hammer grip (close to the chest), with the same side foot on the floor, the opposite knee and hand resting on a flat bench, and bent at the waist. Extend your arms back until the elbow is fully extended (but not locked) – keeping your arm in tight to your side. Hold briefly before bending the elbow joint and returning to the starting position.

nutrition tip: plant-based diet

For some people, transitioning to a more plant-based diet is a great way to eat healthy while reducing their carbon footprint. One study by the University of Oxford found that a vegan diet can reduce your carbon footprint by up to 73%! Plant-based diets may be appealing for health reasons, environmental reasons, or animal welfare concerns. Whatever the reasons may be for eating less meat, it’s hard to ignore the health benefits which include a reduced risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, obesity, and several cancers.1

physio's corner

Q: I have been experiencing headaches, can physiotherapy help me?

A: There are many things that can cause a headache, such as physical trauma, stress, hormone imbalances, dehydration, muscle tension, spinal misalignment, light intolerance, viruses, poor posture, fatigue, etc. It is important to seek medical attention if a headache is rapid in onset and severe in pain with or without any visual or speech disturbances.

Many of the causes of a headache can be identified and treated by a physiotherapist. If a headache is identified as ‘cervicogenic’ in origin, it means there is a component of neck dysfunction. A physiotherapist will assess your posture, active and passive range of motion, muscle tone, and joint mobility to help determine the underlying cause of your headaches. In most cases, adjustments to your posture with some soft tissue treatment will greatly reduce the frequency and severity of headaches. Soft tissue treatment can consist of massage, stretching, intramuscular stimulation (IMS) or dry needling, acupuncture, or shockwave therapy. Your physiotherapist may also prescribe some stretching or strength exercises, to facilitate postural change.
