ICS Department Spotlight
Student Spotlight
ICS student spotlight is Rumesh Senthilnathan. Please read below for what Rumesh has to share. Thank you again for sharing your experience, Rumesh!

I am a Computer Science Major, and I am in between my Sophomore and Junior year. After graduation I plan on going to Graduate school. My career aspirations are to work with autonomous drones, aircraft and spacecraft.

My best college memory so far would be working in the Robot Autonomy and Navigation Lab. I get to work on real world problems in the area I am passionate to make as my career. This lab has given me valuable experience in application of concepts learnt and actively learning new skills.

What advice would I give underclassmen and/or peers? I would say to not let any opportunity slip by. I found an email mentioning PACE and I just applied to see what I can do with them. I ended up becoming a student director at the Calvin Shindo Venture Fund at PACE. I now have over half a year’s worth of experience in venture capital. In my personal experience, I have always found that one opportunity leads to another and another. One can gain a lot of knowledge and experience which can be very valuable for future endeavors.

COVID19 has been a hard time for all of us, it was challenging to learn and follow the new online format for classes. I personally had a rough first few weeks adjusting. It became manageable when I was able to put into perspective what I was doing this all for. I pictured
my graduation and getting closer to my goals. I then realized that hard work and smart work will pay off. It is important to stay fit and healthy, regular exercise and some down time to relax will keep both the mind and body healthy.

RadGrad Highlight(s)
RadGrad Student Interview

RadGrad (https://radgrad.org) is an ICS Department initiative to help undergraduates learn about the field of computer science, the opportunities that are available, and how you can maximize your degree experience!

This month, we interview Jenny Hsu, who recently achieved Level 6 (Ninja) in RadGrad

1. Congratulations on getting Level 6 in RadGrad! What motivated you to get all the way through with RadGrad, and how has it benefited you?

I actually love stickers so when I was first introduced to RadGrad in Professor Moore’s ICS 211, I was already intrigued by the system and wanted that Black (Level 6) sticker. However as I looked through RadGrad, I found myself adding more and more activities to my planner -- ones that I previously didn’t even know existed (eg. ACM ICPC, HACC, ITMA, etc...). The stickers were definitely a motivation, but what I found to be the biggest factor was me wanting to quantify my learning. Getting a degree is the end goal for everyone, but I also wanted to make sure I was applying what I was learning. Sometimes in classes a lot of what you learn is theory or foundation and you wonder what it would be like in practice. RadGrad was that bridge for me. It allowed me to track my career development and introduce me to all the different opportunities on the island. Without it, I honestly don’t think I would have been able to get my internship at eWorld, which eventually turned into a full time offer!

2. What do you think the most useful features of RadGrad are for an incoming ICS student?

I personally found the “Opportunities” section to be the most useful. Finding internships or extracurricular activities are important and oftentimes can be the deciding factor between passing a resume screening and auto-rejection. I decided to declare ICS as my second major when I was a Junior so I felt that pressure of trying to find internships before I graduated. The opportunities where I learned the most were actually found through RadGrad. I also found the career goal section to be quite useful. I like the way it is organized, whereupon clicking on said career, it provides more information on what the job might be like and what potential courses to take. It did end up influencing my decision on what classes to take. Lastly, being able to drag courses, opportunities, and internships in a cohesive planner was also helpful. It helped me visualize what my next couple semesters would have looked like and allowed me to plan accordingly.

3. I know you are now working at eWorld, a local high tech company. How is that going?

Working at eWorld has been great! Because eWorld is a technology consulting company, the projects we have always change. You’ll always be learning something new. I primarily use Java, Javascript, and Vue in my day-to-day activities. Aside from the standard full-stack development responsibilities, I also sometimes write API tests and lead stand up. Because the team I am on is small, everyone gets to wear multiple hats. I have, and continue to learn new things every day from my coworkers!

Interested in RadGrad? Contact Professor Philip Johnson (johnson@hawaii.edu) and he'll get you registered with the system and send you details on how to get involved.
