ALC Alumni Spotlight
Genevieve Jacobs, ALC graduate Class of 2021, has returned to the department to pursue her MA in Chinese Literature and Culture. Under Professor Anatoly Detwyler and Professor Rania Huntington, her studies revolve around East Asian countries and their populations in times of modern strife, topics ranging from economic struggle to wars to social justice movements.

Though the subjects are often heavy, Genevieve is thrilled to be able to continue doing what she loves: learning. Her dream is to become a professor someday, but for now, her hopes in graduate school are to gain the skills to become a better scholar and the perspective to become a better person.
David Burnett, ALC graduate Class of 2020 has also joined UW-Madison as a SEVIS specialist. SEVIS stands for "Student and Exchange Visitor Information System" and is a database of foreign students in the United States utilized by the Department of Homeland Security. David's work helps with international student transition and immigration compliance. David's past experience living abroad and knowledge of Japanese and Chinese has made him a fitting candidate for this position.

Before coming to UW-Madison as a SEVIS specialist, David worked at the sales office of a Japanese company outside Chicago. Japanese was helpful to his career as there is a large number of Japanese companies with their United States offices in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

David misses his friends and family in Madison, and he is excited to be a part of a friendly and helpful team at UW-Madison and also directly help students of his alma mater.
Noah Klosowski, Class of 2021

"Since I received my degree this summer, I have been admitted to the Psychoactive Pharmaceutical Investigation MS program here at UW. In this program we focus primarily on psychedelic drugs, however, our material also more generally covers central nervous system drug interactions and development. I just finished my second week of class, and while the material is challenging, the professors, students, and content have made the overall experience exciting. This is the first semester of this program's existence, so it'll be interesting to see where it goes in the next few years. Through this program I hope to eventually work in regulatory affairs pertaining to schedule 1 drugs, and furthermore I hope to advocate for the appropriate use of these drugs in science and society"

Student Resources

Matriculate is a national nonprofit which trains college students at top institutions to provide free, high quality virtual advising services to high-achieving, low-income high school students. We aim to provide them with the information, guidance, and support that they need to apply to, gain admission to, and excel at the best colleges and universities. Matriculate is in the process of recruiting their 2023 cohort. Apply here by October 18th.

The Peer-2-Peer Mentorship Program (P2P) is a GUTS pilot program intended to support first-year students, second-year students, and transfer students who have started college during the pandemic and/or who do not have much familiarity with the UW-Madison campus and its resources. Students who would like to participate in this low time-commitment program can sign up to be a mentor or get a mentor. The purpose of this mentorship is to help mentees by answering questions or concerns, and help them get acclimated to and connected to UW-Madison's campus.

Once matched, mentors will meet with their mentees at orientation (date TBD), at least once in October and November, and at the end of semester celebration in December (date TBD).  Participants must commit a total (and minimum) of 4 hours or 4 meetings for the entire semester (or more if mentors/mentees choose). For more information or to sign-up, go to https://guts.wisc.edu/p2p/
