An Update From The Session

The Session met Wednesday, 9/8/21, the elders passed the following resolution:

Because of the growing number of COVID-19 cases (of which the more infectious Delta variant is the most prevalent) reported, it is becoming increasingly likely that even fully vaccinated, apparently healthy individuals are carrying the virus. While they may be asymptomatic or have only very mild symptoms, they are still capable of passing the virus to others. We therefore propose we take steps to minimize the rate of re-infection that are consistent with the apparent viral load that is in the local community. We have, for our ready reference, an indication of the local viral load as manifested by the number of COVID cases in our county; the Indiana COVID-19 Dashboard and Advisory Map (https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/2393.htm). At the same time, we recognize that the high vaccination rate in the church community is helping to keep the viral load low within the church building. We therefore propose that we follow these guidelines. When Vigo County is:

  • Blue conditions - Normal services without restriction.

  • Yellow - Normal services without restriction, masking and distancing would be recommended.

  • Orange - Masking required, distancing strongly recommended. Choir and other music subject to the individual participants comfort level.

  • Red - Masking and distancing required, suspension of choir and children's school/service (children to remain with parents and not go forward for children's moment)

In April the session of the Central Presbyterian Church passed a resolution declaring ourselves a Matthew 25 church.  (In this chapter Jesus tells his followers that when we minister to "the least of these" we minister to him.)  Since then, the elders have worked on how to live out our Matthew 25 status in terms of inclusion in church life for people across the spectrum of gender identities.  At their September 8th, 2021 meeting, the elders adopted this statement:

Christ welcomes everyone, no matter where you are in your faith and life journey.  In faithfulness to our understanding of Christ, Central Presbyterian Church affirms the full inclusion of all God’s people in the life and ministry of the church.  We love persons of all races, ages, genders, ethnicities, sexualities, family and economic status.  We welcome everyone into full participation in our faith community.

All pastors and elders vow upon ordination to "further the peace, purity and unity of the church".  We pray our actions this month will do this very thing.

Please remember masks are required for all in our building right now.
We appreciate your adherence to these guidelines.
COVID-19 vaccine booster shots are being made available to older adults and higher risk adults. While it's expected for demand to be high, booster shot will hopefully be available locally at CVS. Appointments can be made online at CVS.com
Thanks to church member Susan Hodge for sharing this info with us!

Kids Hope Update

Thank you to volunteer Pat Smith for helping to get our Kids Hope volunteer program up and running this fall. Six mentors have begun mentoring their students who moved from Deming Elementary to Franklin Elementary.

We do have 3 boys and 1 girl in need of a mentor. Anyone interested should contact Pat Smith at pssendbaskets@hotmail.com.
Need for Hygiene Items!

Manna from 7 and the United Campus Ministries food pantries report that they need personal hygiene items, especially hygiene items for women
We do have plenty of grocery bags and do not have a need for those at this time.

Please consider donating these necessities.  The mission committee will provide a well-marked tub in the Fellowship Hall to receive items that will be given to Manna and UCM distribution sites.  We will collect throughout September. Monetary donations are also being accepted.
Contact Andrew Conner with questions or to make a monetary contribution.

Prayers for this week:
Morning:

Shine upon my ways.
May I this day get nearer heaven.
May I feel at its close that I have done something for God --
something to promote the great end
for which existence was given me --
the glory of Thy holy name.
Amen
   -- John Macduff (1818-1895)
Evening:

Light of the world,
shine upon our minds and hearts.
Spirit of truth,
guide us into all truth.
Holy Father, sanctify us through Thy truth,
and make us wise unto salvation,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
   -- Lawrence Tuttiett (1825-1897)
