Kick off of the 21/22 Youth Season
With less than a month to go to season kick off for the Youth (Sunday 10th October), it was great to get some new Youth members at the Club Registration day last Saturday. We look forwards to seeing you on the beach. Many thanks to all those who supported the Registration Day, with the a special call out to Marina Deans, Deb Tasker and Lani and Jeff Baxter for their support in taking the new Youth through the range of activities on offer this season. This includes Club programs to recognise Youth participation and achievement (YIP and YLP). Some additional information on these is detailed below.
Youth Competition Entry Update
Huge congratulations to Lani Baxter, Georgie Overton, Jackson Tasker and Tristan Oesterwinter for great performances at the RLSSWA Championships on Sunday.
Surf Life Saving WA have now published the Surf Sport Calendar 2021/22 which can be found at the link below. We have a busy competition season ahead!

Entries are now open for the opening round of the WA Iron Series 2021 - R1 the Enduro which will take place at City Beach on Sunday 24th October. Entries are made directly and not through the club. Youth categories are for a combined U14/15 or U17 male and female. The enduro is a great way to challenge yourself and test your early-season fitness.

Youth Leadership and Incentive programs
Sorrento Surf Lifesaving Club supports two programs to recognise Youth participation and achievements. These are YIPs and YLP:
YIPs: Youth Incentive Program. This is a Sorrento SLSC program that is designed to motivate, recognise and reward our youth. It is a points based system. As a member you are automatically enrolled in this program. You are only required to record your activities and participation through the season and then at the end of the season you have the opportunity to exchange those points for rewards.
YLP: Youth Leadership Program. YLP is a SLSWA Youth Pathways program that gives our youth the opportunity to record the activities and courses they undertake in the areas of Lifesaving, Training, Leadership and Surf Sports. There are three levels the youth can work towards achieving in the this program: Bronze, Silver and Gold. More information on these pathways can be found on the pathways Link below.
To be involved in the YLP and SLSWA Pathways program we need you to complete the SLSWA Expression of Interest (EOI) for Youth Program Pathways. The EOI leads to
- Enrolment into SLSWA Pathways programs
- State level recognition for participating in surf club activities and programs.
- Enables our club’s ability to provide Youth members with additional club-based support and motivation
You only need to complete the EOI once and you can add to it in the years to come.
Please review the Youth Pathway Programs offered and consider a pathway which might interest you. These programs provide opportunities to build up a resume or portfolio with recognised qualifications and practical vocational experience which could be useful when applying for other courses or employment, all while enjoying beach activities with friends.
A link to the online EOI form is here (scroll down): https://www.mybeach.com.au/members/youth_program/pathways/
Your club contact (for EOI completion) is, Jeff Baxter, 08 9448 1431, jbaxter@aps-supply.com
Alternatively, you can complete and return the attached PDF to SLSWA.

SRC Course
The dates for the first SRC of the season are below. These are:
- Saturday 16th October 8am – 12:15pm
- Saturday 23rd October 8am – 12:15pm
- Sunday 31st October – TBA (depends when assessment finishes. Aim for 12:30 but depends on competency etc)
Note : Any issues with bad weather will impact the schedule. We would need to reserve the right to go one week longer for weather or competency issues
We will also need parent water safety support and for the candidates to be able to practise radios etc between sessions.
All candidates must attend all sessions. We would encourage all of our new U14 for the season to attend and complete this course. Successful completion of this course allows the U14’s to patrol and is a requirement for competitions (noting that U14’s can compete on the Nipper competition qualification until the end of the year).
Please ensure that you have registered your interest with Jess ASAP as the course pre-work will commence shortly. ( admin@sorrentoslsc.org.au).
School Holiday Bronze Course
The Bronze course will take place between Monday 4th Oct to Saturday 9th Oct. (second week of school holidays). This course is aimed at those Youth moving up from U15’s last season to U17 this season (there is no U16 group).
If you want to compete (U17’s and upwards), patrol, become a boatie or participate in other courses that the club offers, successful completion of the Bronze is a prerequisite. This is a great opportunity to complete the course in a week, rather than over a series of weekends.
Please ensure that you have registered your interest with Jess ASAP as the course pre-work will commence shortly ( admin@sorrentoslsc.org.au). Members are required to be fully paid up at the start of the course. There is a component of pre-work for the course that will be communicated to the participants shortly.
