Welcome to Oh Scrap! from Diane Harris at Stash Bandit:
Tips and tricks for better scrappy quilts!
Straight lines against curved shapes
Prints with different shapes look better together
than prints with similar shapes.
I'm always looking for a print that has different shapes than the one I'm pairing it with. The blocks above and below are examples. A simple block is more interesting if the shapes in the prints are different from each other in some way.
Lines in the orange print are different than the geese shapes in the background.
Difference is always more interesting than sameness.
Circles and dots (does anyone else see breasts?) look great against stripes.
Even inside a scrappy block with many fabrics, I'm working to choose lots of different shapes and lines in the prints.
Stripes, dots, circles, nature shapes, geometric lines and more
If this concept is new for you, start simply. Make units with just two fabrics like these half-square triangle examples.
Nature shapes contrast with the straight lines of a check.
Polka dots dance against a grid in red-orange.
Swirls against straight lines are looking good.
Here's what not to do!
Lines against lines: too much the same.
Plaids with stripes? Too many lines.
Vary the shapes and the lines in your prints.
Your quilts will thank you!
I was pleasantly surprised to learn recently that my quilt "The Big Cheese" is on the cover of the newest Quiltmania (Sept/Oct '21). It is so named because of all the cheddar-colored fabric. Didn't Quiltmania style it beautifully? 😊And more good news: This quilt is not difficult to sew!
I'm booking programs and classes for 2022 and 2023 now and most engagements will be virtual. I'd love to visit your quilt group via Zoom! Consider booking a virtual trunk show and class: Avoid winter travel disruptions or save your guild hundreds in expenses. Everybody wins!
