News from the Cape Elizabeth Education Foundation                       October - 2021
"We're Back!" was the proclamation by the Cape school district, and that energy and excitement are certainly the feelings at CEEF too. We have been busy reaching out to each school to encourage educators to dream big with their grant ideas, as well as introducing CEEF to new staff and administration.  Fall is always full of possibilities, and for CEEF, that means new collaborations, and back to work to bring innovations to Cape students.

Place Based Learning at Turkey Hill Farm

With the new 2021-2022 school year comes new opportunities for innovation and collaboration! We are excited to announce that 8th grade teacher Joanna Payne was recently awarded a grant to establish a new CEMS place-based learning program in collaboration with Turkey Hill Farm and the Cape Elizabeth Land Trust. The program, which grew in response to the pandemic, is led by an integrated team of 4 teachers (Payne, Price, Moniz, Fileo) who are deeply committed to our students' educational and social-emotional growth.

"Place-based education is about the power of taking students out of the traditional classroom to develop learning opportunities centered on a place, in our case Turkey Hill Farm. We will develop stewardship, collaboration, environmental awareness, community identity, and intellectual growth." explains Ms. Payne. “Our vision is to create a team of 7th and 8th graders who learn and grow together through their connections with each other and a new, exciting learning environment, Turkey Hill Farm."

8th grade student Ava Daviault is thankful for the opportunity to "get out of the classroom and be mask-free!" Classmate Dani Schauf adds "Turkey Hill Farm is such a great outdoor space. You can relax and learn out there! I love it! I wish I could go out there more." Music to our ears!

Thompson and Brownell Awards Announced

Our Brownell Award and Thompson Awards were awarded at the district's back-to-school meeting, giving the recipients the opportunity to be recognized and celebrated by their peers. The Thompson Award, named in honor of Timmy Thompson, celebrates a member of the Cape Elizabeth school community who has gone above and beyond for students. Our annual Brownell Award, in honor of retired CEHS teacher Elaine Brownell, celebrates an outstanding grant from the previous year.

"Literacy Collections - Helping At-Risk Readers" was this year's recipient of the Brownell Award and was presented to Mary Dulac, Becky Swift and Rosemary Ginn (Pond Cove's literacy team) for their innovative and adaptive grant. The change from in-person to remote learning in Spring 2020 meant Pond Cove's most vulnerable readers weren’t getting as many “new-to-them” books for frequent reading practice. With a CEEF grant, 24 book bags, consisting of 12 books each, were assembled and distributed to students for Summer reading and showcased the team's dedication and adaptability for their students.

This year's Thompson Award went to former CEHS Principal Jeff Shedd, a leader, innovator and advocate for teachers and students for 20 years.  As one award nomination stated, Shedd's "greatest attribute is that he has never shown himself to be satisfied with any single achievement, nor deterred by any failure or negative event." Shedd clearly exemplifies the attributes of the award as an educator who consistently went above and beyond for the entire district.

Community members can submit a nomination for the 2022 Thompson Award, or read more about past Brownell and Thompson Awards recipients at www.ceef.us/awards
