"Unit 08’s research this year started with the provocation that our society has enough already: enough resources, enough buildings, and enough space, the problem lies in their allocation. Moreover, the nature of how we use spaces in the city is changing, as our homes have become offices, cinemas, gyms, restaurants and more. What followed was a yearlong investigation into an architecture of reuse, starting with a Georgian House in Spitalfields and ending with buildings on the Truman Brewery Site. Projects began with a forensic analysis of existing buildings through highly detailed drawings, and clay and plaster models of their fragments revealing the patterns, patinas and construction logic that form their built character.
Grounded in these studies, a variety of thesis’ were hosted by buildings at the Truman Brewery Site, navigating issues of land ownership, public space, civic engagement, performing arts, and manufacturing to name a few. Collectively the Unit’s output offers an optimistic view on the capacity for the Truman Site to be a place of rich cultural and intellectual activity, offering alternative community-focused ideas to the proposed development."
