Gear up for Manchester Clean Air Plan

If your business takes you over the border into Greater Manchester, you may soon seen signs and enforcement cameras being installed as the area gets ready for the anticipated launch of the Clean Air Zone from 30 May 2022. Cameras are just being installed and tested at the moment and enforcement won't commerce until the zone is launched.

The zone is designed to reduce air pollution from road traffic in Greater Manchester and bring it within legal limits.  It will also have benefits for High Peak residents - as air quality improvements and upgrading of vehicles to reduce emissions will benefit everyone.

The Clean Air Zone will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year round, and include most local roads in Greater Manchester. Most roads managed by Highways England, such as motorways and trunk roads, will not be included, with a few exceptions. Find out more

From 30 May 22, commercial vehicles including vans, HGVs, hackney cabs, private hire vehicles, buses, coaches and some specialist vehicles (that are classified as commercial) that don't meet emission standards will start to pay a daily charge to drive in the zone. Private cars, motorbikes and mopeds aren't included and will not be charged.

Find out whether your vehicle will be affected.

If your commercial vehicle doesn't meet the required standards, you may wish to think about upgrading over the coming months rather than pay the daily charges which will be:
  • Buses and heavy goods vehicles (HGV) – £60
  • Coaches – £60
  • Taxis and private hire vehicles – £7.50
  • Light goods vehicles (LGV) e.g. vans and minibuses – £10
Some vehicles will be exempt  e.g. historic vehicles, military vehicles, disabled passenger vehicles, and specialist emergency service vehicles.

At this moment in time, there is no funding available for High Peak businesses, other than bus operators, whose services cover both High Peak and Greater Manchester. The Council would be interested in hearing from affected businesses who may be worried about the impact on their overheads. Contact regeneration@highpeak.gov.uk

In addition to the existing proposals, the Clean Air Greater Manchester Zone is also consulting on extending Clean Air Zone requirements to include motorhomes - read consultation and respond

Covid - the Autumn and Winter Plan

The Government has announced its plans to help steer the country through the colder months of the year.

The 'Plan A' approach includes:
  • Vaccines, antivirals and disease modifying therapeutics
  •  Encouraging people to test, trace and isolate
  • Providing clear guidance and communications
Coronavirus remains a serious health risk and we are all advised to:
  • Let fresh air in when meeting indoors. Meeting outdoors is safer.
  • Wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces where you come into contact with people you don't usually meet
  • Get tested and self-isolate if required
  • If you haven't already, get vaccinated
