1 October: It's UN International Day of Older Persons 2021

This UN International Day of Older Persons, Greater Manchester is supporting the #OlderAndGreener campaign, as part of the UK Network of Age-Friendly Communities.

Older people are as concerned about the climate crisis as younger people new research finds. In Greater Manchester, generations are tackling the climate emergency together.

As an age-friendly city region we are working to ensure older people's contributions are seen, and voices are heard, as we unite in the fight against climate change. Hear from older people at the Greater Manchester Green Summit on 18 October.

We invite you to join us on Twitter using the hashtag #OlderandGreener and #IDOP2021.

Thank you for your support with this year's campaign.

Generations Unite: This is What An Activist Looks Like
Generations Unite: This Is What An Activist Looks Like

A living library event is being held today, Friday October 1,  to mark the launch of a new campaign that breaks stereotypes on what an activist looks like and showcase how generations are working together to tackle climate change.

The ‘This Is What An Activist Looks Like’ campaign launch coincides with the International Day of Older Persons and the living library event will give people the opportunity to talk to activists from all walks of life to be inspired to make a change in their communities.

All are welcome to the free drop-in event, which is being held at Manchester Central Library between 2pm-3.30pm. The afternoon will also premiere a new campaign video that features eight activists – young and old – uniting in the fight against climate change.

A living library event allows visitors to browse the ‘bookcases’ and choose the ‘story’ they want to listen to, pull up a pew, and have a conversation with their chosen activist, who will be all set to share their personal stories about their activism to inspire all generations to act.

The campaign has been commissioned by Greater Manchester Older People’s Network (GMOPN) and supported by the Talking About The My Generation team.

Hear from members of GMR Circle on their Community Garden in Rochdale.
Watch the video: The HMR Circle Community Garden project

Older volunteers in Rochdale developed an urban green space into a multi-use allotment, orchard and wild flower area.

The HMR Circle Community Garden is now an urban green space developed into a multi-use allotment, orchard and wild flower area.

The allotment grows food for the RBH Pantries as well as the HMR Circle Dinner Driver Project, producing environmentally friendly, artificial pesticide and fertiliser free, fruit and vegetables, reducing food miles, preserving the local biodiversity and maintaining a 'green lung' in an urban setting.

The HMR Circle Community Garden is maintained by Older People who volunteer each week to keep the garden bursting with life.
Using the fruit and vegetables grown at the garden the Volunteers enjoy a hearty and healthy lunch on site, literally 'garden to plate', all with zero food miles!

The HMR Circle Community Garden has a large traditional flower garden area alongside a wildflower zone to encourage and preserve insect biodiversity and habitat as well as having a naturally aesthetically/visually beautiful area for rest and reflection.

Manchester launches 'In Our Nature' campaign film and digital billboards

Manchester City Council's Communications Team has been working hard with members of the Age-Friendly Manchester Older People's Board and Assembly (featured in the posters) alongside younger members of the community on creating a climate change campaign.

The campaign challenges the myths that older people are responsible for climate change and aren't concerned about the issue.

You can have your say about tackling climate change and find out how to contribute via the In Our Nature MCR website.

Look out for the campaign on the digital billboards in and around Manchester city centre.

Blog: Derek Jarman Pocket Park at Manchester Art Gallery

Pride in Ageing at LGBT Foundation are working in partnership with Manchester Art Gallery to create the Derek Jarman Pocket Park. This new community garden space will be inspired by artist, filmmaker, activist and gardener Derek Jarman and his celebrated garden in Dungeness, Kent.

The Derek Jarman Pocket Park is being designed and planted by a volunteer group who are members of Pride in Ageing, a programme launched by LGBT Foundation to ensure that the voices of LGBTQ+ people over the age of 50 are heard when it comes to ageing policy and activity in Greater Manchester.

Case study: Making active travel part of every day in Wigan

To mark International Day of Older Persons 2021, Wigan resident Deb West explains the role active travel plays in her life, and why it’s so important both for individual health and a greener planet.

Active travel is something Deb consciously plans into her daily life. ‘If I get together with a friend for coffee, we meet up on our bikes first to cycle there - making exercise and our journey part of our time together’ she explains.
