1. News 

Thank you to Dr. Vasu Venkateswaran
Dr. Vasundara Venkateswaran, a long-standing Graduate Coordinator, has left the IMS. We are grateful for her many years of service and leadership. In addition to her role as Graduate Coordinator, she has also served as the Director of the Summer Undergraduate Research Program, Chair of Graduate Admissions and Chair of the Ori Rotstein Lecture in Translational Research. Dr. Venkateswaran has made an indelible mark on the IMS community and has been an exceptional mentor for countless students and staff members. We wish her all the best in her future endeavours.
Raw Talk Podcast Season 6 is officially here! In episode #97 Let’s Talk Grad School, we had a grad student round table discussion on everything we wish we knew about grad school. Mel, Jesse, Helen, Noor & Daniel spoke about building a healthy relationship with your supervisor, networking with peers, managing stress from the pandemic, coping with failure, and preventing burnout. We also spoke with our fellow grad student Samantha Ing-Esteves about how the Graduate Representation Committee at U of T Temerty Medicine advocates for domestic and international grad students! Fire Side Chats: Richard K. Reznick Wilson Centre Virtual Research Celebration

The Future of the Professions in the Age of COVID-19

The Institute for Education Research at UHN will host a talk by Daniel Susskind, a Fellow in economics at Oxford University and visiting professor at King's College London. He will explore two futures for the professions. One is reassuringly familiar, the other is transformational. Register here.
Data Collection Tools for Researchers: What to Use and When
Oct. 8, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

The Centre for Research and Innovation Support is offering a new workshop – “Data Collection Tools for Researchers: What to Use and When.” This session will explore two data collection tools – REDCap and Microsoft Forms. Specifically, this session will provide a review of the key features of each tool and showcase examples to illustrate the potential utility of these tools for different types of research use cases. IMS Peer-to-Peer Mentorship Program - Call for Members

Feeling overwhelmed about the transition to graduate school? Have questions about PAC meetings, modules, courses, and presentations? Are you a returning graduate student who can help incoming students with these questions? The IMS Peer2Peer (P2P) Mentorship Program, designed by IMS students, is here for you! Please fill out the appropriate form below by Sept. 30 to be matched with a mentor or mentee.

The IMS seeks one Junior Teaching Assistant for MSC7000Y - Regenerative Medicine (Jan. - Apr. 2022)
 
MSC7000Y is a unique course of wide interest that will provide an understanding of the science behind the regenerative medicine field, new and emerging technologies, and the ethical and regulatory aspects of implementation.  Course modules consist of: Transplant and Organ Failure, Stem Cells, Repair and Regeneration, Clinical Trials and Translation, and Business of Regenerative Medicine.
 
Qualifications:
  • Current MSc or PhD student
  • Completion of the MSC7000Y course
  • Strong science background in regenerative medicine

5. Awards & Recognitions:

The Temerty Centre for AI Research and Education in Medicine (T-CAIREM) has announced two winners of the Temerty Innovation Grants for AI in Medicine and one winner of the CIFAR-Temerty Innovation Catalyst Grant. 

Congratulations to Drs. Shaf Keshavjee and Mojgan Hodaie, who are among the Principal Investigators of the grant-winning projects:

  • Dr. Shaf Keshavjee (UHN Research): Research project: “Advanced Ex Vivo Organ Assessments for Clinical Lung Transplant Using AI.” (Temerty Innovation Grant - $200,000 CAD) For more information on Dr. Shav Keshavjee
  • Dr. Mojgan Hodaie (UHN) Research project: “An Artificial Intelligence-based MR Imagine Reconstruction Framework” (CIFAR-Temerty Innovation Catalyst Grant - $130,000) For more information on Dr. Mojgan Hodaie.

Canada at risk of a sharp, NRA-style turn on gun policy - The Hamilton Spectator

Drs. Najma Ahmed and Philip Berger write that focusing on evidence-based preventative measures that target social determinants, such as tackling poverty, racism, shutting down gun smuggling and investments in mental health, will minimize harm and prevent gun violence.
Opioid overdose response now part of Red Cross first aid, CPR training as deaths mount - CBC

The Canadian Red Cross has added training to identify and respond to opioid poisoning in all its first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) programs across the country. Dr. Hance Clarke says these actions are the culmination of years of research and data.
Suicides in Canada fell 32 percent in first year of pandemic compared with year before, report finds - Globe and Mail

Despite isolating lockdowns and a sharp rise in unemployment,  suicides fell by 32 percent in the first year of the pandemic compared with the year before it, a study led by Dr. Roger McIntyre found. 

Stroke survivor describes what it’s like to live with dementia - CTV Your Morning

Last week on Your Morning, Paul Lea spoke about living with dementia and how it has impacted his life. Senior Scientist Dr. Etienne Sibille also spoke on how research can hold the key to reversing memory loss, combat dementia and help save lives. 
AI Happy Hour - Women at the Forefront of Medicine & AI - Stanford AIMI

IMS alumna Dr. Alaa Youssef was featured in this live panel discussion that's part of the AI Happy Hour series, brought to you by Stanford AIMI and friends. Discussion included hot topics in AI in medicine as well as live questions & comments from attendees.
